The vast, vast majority of music fans would pick neither of the bands you selected as the greatest American band of all time.

Also it really is an impossible question to begin with

The Eagles, Beach Boys, Aerosmith, and Alabama, in no particular order.

Which makes giving two options even dumber.

The allman brothers have 2 drummers, 2 guitarisr and a singer better than all those bands. They're literally better at everything but writing lyrics but I like music better than poetry

taken at face value it’s not fake binary or a troll at all. You can make an excellent case that either Metallica or the Dead are indeed the greatest American rock band ever, OP thinks so which is fine. There are other candidates (the byrds for example). In my mind the Grateful Dead are the quintessential American rock band and second place is pretty damn far down the list

Not anywhere close to being in the discussion. Great band, no doubt, but be serious.

Duke Ellington's jazz orchestra would be my 'claim' since it wasn't established that pop/rock is the genre.

Metallica or Grateful Dead

Metallica is light years better than the Grateful Dead.

Several others mentioned are worthy of consideration, most notably Aerosmith and Van Halen. But the Eagles are, in my estimation, the GOAT.

No one has mentioned The Talking Heads
They have to be in the discussion

Yea, the phrase I’ve heard is, “Americans define it. The British refine it.”

Agreed. Velvet Underground, Big Star, Byrds and Steely Dan should also be in the discussion and have not been mentioned.

So apparently this is the thread where everyone just lists their favorite American band.

Big Star? They made 3 albums and were commercial failures.

Now I don’t think commercial success is a huge part of whether a band is good, but you have to have a bit of success to make this list.

We are discussing the greatest American band EVER!

Someone said once "To be British is to know two things; that you once ruled the world, and that all your current rock bands sound like shite".

It definitely depends on how you define "greatest," but the Ramones have got to be one of the most influential American bands at the very least.
