Great radio stations past and present

I was in the Mobile area this week and tuned in a radio station I loved when I lived there for one year in the 1980's. It still plays a unique combination of alternative and classic rock. It got me to thinking about other radio stations I use to enjoy. Here are three that come to mind that includes that one.
WZEW - the zew in Mobile, Alabama
WRAS - Atlanta. Played alternative rock when it was becoming popular. My favorite station during college.
WRKK - K99 in Birmingham. Album rock station that was an early pioneer on the FM dial at the time.

I loved the ZEW back in the late 80s. It was truly homegrown radio; alternative college mixed with Americana, jazz and soul. Robert Cray, David and David, Joe Jackson, John Hiatt, Marc Cohn, REM, Bruce Hornsby, Suzanne Vega, Radiators, etc. It was just an eclectic mix of good radio.
I worked at the ZEW for awhile as an account executive. Was a lot of fun and scored a lot of free, cool albums.
ZEW changed its format for awhile, but due to public demand went back to the college radio sound. Catt Sirten who was the program director back in the 80s is still with the station. Still doing Jazz Brunch on Sundays.
92.1 WZEW, a Mobile tradition.

When Rock 92.3 WCKW was in its prime - late 80's - early 90's - I could listen to it 24/7.

What I loved about the station was not only the new music I heard, but because it was in Little Rock and me in south LA., it faded in and out, making it extra spooky !!!!!

I went to South Alabama for my freshman year in college during the mid 1980's and loved listening to the ZEW. I even recorded a bunch of the content on cassette tapes before I transferred so I could still listen to it. I wonder what ever happened to all those tapes.

We were at USA at the same time. I graduated in '86. The Zew is still the only thing worth listening to in Mobile. I'd love to hear those tapes-good times, good music.

100.7 in Baton Rouge when it was a rock station
92.3 both the Baton Rouge and Lafayette versions were awesome. I think the Baton Rouge version was a little better though.

106.1 The zephyr in New Orleans.
Then the end came out and put them out of business. The end played the same shite over and over. The zephyr would mix it up a bit more.

I first heard Yes, Pink Floyd, and The Allman Brothers on Beaker St. One night after a high school dance was over 6 or 7 of us were crammed in a chevy nova ridding around listening, we pooled our pocket change and called Clyde "long distance" from a payphone to request a song, don't remember what it was though.
