Well Frank settled down in the Valley
and hung his wild years
on a nail that he drove through
his wife's forehead

"I can hardly bear the sight of lipstick on the cigarette there in the ashtray.
Lying cold the way you left it, but at least your lips coressed it as you packed.
And a lip print on a half filled cup of coffee that you poured and didn't drink
But at least you thought you wanted it, that's so much more than I can say for me"

A little more than the first sentence, but couldn't leave out the rest

"The bars are all closed, it's four in the morning
Must've shut em all down by the shape that I'm in
Lord it's been ten bottles since I've tried to forget her
But her memory still lingers, lying here on the floor"

If drinking don't kill me- George jones

Once again, more than just the first sentence... Oh well

The Rolling Stones were the absolute masters of opening lyrics.
So true. Hard to top lines like "I met a gin soaked bar room queen in Memphis" and "I was born in a crossfire hurricane."

Also the opening line to Freebird has to be included - "If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?" Even more poignant in hindsight.

A few others:
"Goodbye Norma Jean, though I never knew you at all"
"On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair, warm smell of collitas rising up through the air."

When the wind don’t blow in Amarillo
and the moon along the gunnison don’t rise
shall I cast my dreams upon your love, babe
and lie beneath the laughter of your eyes?

It took me a while to realize that the wind always blows in Amarillo and what the song was actually saying.

Its the opening of the second verse, but I love:

Thank you for your wine, California,
Thank you for your sweet and bitter fruits.
