Gram Parsons - Any fans out there ?

He was one of the major artists that made country/country rock cool in the 60's in my opinion. He was a good friend of the Stones and was pretty influential in several of their songs (Wild Horses, Honky Tonk Women). Also was in the Byrds for one great album (Sweetheart of the Rodeo)

Check out this song where he perfectly melds Folsom Prison Blues and That's Alright Mama into one song.

The steel guitar is awesome on this song.

Have been getting into him and the Flying Burrito Brothers lately. Never had gotten into him or anything, but started hearing him on the Bakersfield beat xm station.

Gram was an amazing songwriter.

Byrds, flying burrito brothers, his solo work, all great.

Grievous angel is probably my favorite album he worked on.

His grave is in kenner or meterie, ive been meaning to check it out.

Had no idea.

Just looked it up (was wondering what his connection to the area was), and it seems an interesting story behind that.

quote:

He wanted his body cremated in the desert near the Joshua Tree National Monument, a place he loved (and, in fact, where he died).

quote:

Bob Parsons [note:his step father who adopted him after his dad killed himself] (who is now deceased) had arranged to have the body flown to New Orleans, believing that if he could establish a Louisiana domicile for Gram, as the closest male relative he would be the sole heir under the Napoleonic Code.

quote:

But Phil Kaufman and an accomplice borrowed a hearse and stole Gram’s body from the Los Angeles airport. They drove to Joshua Tree, doused the casket with gasoline, and set it afire. But their effort was not entirely successful, and what was left of Gram’s remains were shipped to Louisiana and buried at Garden of Memories on Airline Highway. Today there is a headstone bearing the inscription “Gram Parsons, God’s Own Singer,” and both Garden of Memories and Joshua Tree are considered shrines by Gram’s fans.

Johnny Knoxville has supposedly made a Gram Parsons biopic. I’m not sure what happened.

He was an amazing songwriter though and larger than life character in music history. It’s hard to find, but there’s a cover/tribute album out there called Return of the Grevious Angel that is really really good.

It's called "Grand Theft Parsons", and the story is interesting.

It's damn good. Emmylou Harris put it together (for obvious reasons). The high point is probably Lucinda Williams and David Crosby doing Return of the Grievous Angel.

I'm a fan.

"Hot Burrito #1" and "She" are masterpieces.
