George Harrison's All Things Must Pass Reissue in Top 10-But Critics are trashing it...

It's been 50 years but the re-release has been selling quickly:
George Harrison’s former No. 1 album All Things Must Pass returns to the top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart for the first time since 1971, as the set re-enters at No. 7 (on the Aug. 21-dated list) following its 50th anniversary reissue on Aug. 6.
The album was newly mixed and reissued in a variety of formats for its re-release. All versions of the album, including the original 1970 release, are combined for tracking and charting purposes.

When Bobby Whitlock heard the finished product he said he was “mortified”. “That’s the worst sounding shite I have heard in my life”, he said. “It sounds like it was done by a couple of high school people. You can’t hear anything on it. Its all muddy bass and muddy drums. The voice is out the front but there is no clarity to it. I can hardly believe it. It is fricking awful”.

I only listened to What Is Life, 2001 remaster and the 50th Anniversary remix/remaster. I thought the 2001 remaster sounded better. The vocal is clearer and slightly fuller. There is more separation in the instruments yet everything seems fuller. I also hear slightly more stereo width in the 2001 version. I was surprised. A new remix/remaster should sound better than something 20 years ago, yet, to me, it wasn't.

If a classic piece of work like this is going to be remastered or altered in any way, it should only be to give each element of the music more clarity if possible. I don't know who the tin-eared moron was who originally figured that jacking with levels and EQ would be anything but a downgrade.

Have not heard the re-issue yet, but truly sad if the mix is as bad as some say...
This is a legendary album that deserves quality, epic sound!!

I'm pretty sure Whitlock played on it and is uncredited on the re-release.

There were a few cuts from the original album that Phil Spector destroyed. The Art of Dying and Awaiting On You All are two that he muddled up.

Love this album. My Sweet Lord, Wah Wah, Isn’t it a Pity, Let It Down, Beware of Darkness, All Things Must Pass. A lot of good stuff there. Disappointed to hear about the quality of the reissue, though. I can just keep listening to the old one.
