There are many criticisms one can lay at punk's feet, but cheese isn't really one of them.
Punk lyrics are the epitome of cheesy. I'm not even saying metal isn't cheesy. A large portion of popular metal is very cheesy, but to imply that all metal is cheesy is beyond stupid. I'm just going to rail on anyone who implies any sort of musical superiority of punk over metal.
Nothing cheesy going on there.

My mom still thinks Pearl Jam is a devil worshiping band.

Man, goth is ridiculous. My buddy is a huge Cramps fan and I could never reconcile their homages to death and skeletons with what could've been a really good rockabilly band.
But Seattle grew out of a punk scene almost completely different that that sort of theatricality. The college/art rock punk from which Seattle owes most of its sound to isn't that scene at all. It's more Mission of Burma than the Misfits (with a lot of Iggy Pop thrown in).
It's not a superiority thing because as I said, there are many criticisms one can lay at punk, but cheese isn't really one of them. The whole idea of punk is that it is unprofessional and anyone can do it. Cheese tends to involve theatricality and putting on a big show (John Tesh is cheezy, for example).
The Seattle bands were a bunch of guys wearing flannel and doing heroin. There wasn't a huge cheeze factor there. Your other criticism - about the simplicity - is far more on the mark. But contrary to the cheese insult. Which is my point.

Nirvana on the brain?
I'm going to say AIC, but it's a close one.

I have these two miles ahead of Nirvana. Pearl Jam is in the picture too OP, I totally understand why you didn't go that route.
I am taking Alice in Chains, but I loved Soundgarden growing up! Great bands all around.

AIC by a hair
Cantrell can write some songs, and the haunting vocals of Staley just kill it
soundgarden kicks arse too. Outshined rocks my face off

Soundgarden. Love Chris Cornell.

A lot of the popularity of the Seattle scene was a revolt against the hair bands/80's "cheese." People were just sick of it.

Alice in Chains. Cornell and Staley(RIP) both had unique, iconic voices. But I think Staley was by FAR the better singer and song writer. Cantrell was a man amongst boys and the easily the best guitarist from the Grunge era. Pretty decent singer too.

I'm not a big heavy metal fan but Alice in Chains was great and they have 2 of my all time favorite metal songs with "Would" and "Rooster". AIC's music and vocals were incredibly atmospheric and intense. Almost no other band sounds like AIC
