Frank Zappa - Assembly Center 1977.09.17
Full Concert

Anybody here besides me at that show? Or at the cameo performance at The Kingfish later that night?

I was there, too. I remember him getting into an argument with someone in the audience.

I was there, 17 years old and had no idea what Zappa was about. I went with a friend and his older cousin from N.O. who insisted it would be a good show. So glad I went. I remember him having a sizable band of very good musicians. I think Terry Bozzio was on the drums. He was a funny guy interacting with the crowd and at times would sit on a barstool while his band jammed smoking a cig.............

re: Frank Zappa - Assembly Center 1977.09.17
A friend of mine worked at a record store in town (not Leisure Landing) and the afternoon of that show, he heard a rumor at work that Zappa was going to make an appearance at the Kingfish after the show.

We didn't really believe that would happen but we had nothing to lose so after the concert we cruised over to the Kingfish. We were hanging around, having some drinks and listening to the band (21st Century Band I think). And then someone spotted Zappa in the backstage doorway. He was just leaning against the doorjamb watching the band.

When they finished that number, he walked up on stage and sort of took over. He huddled with the band for a while then grabbed a mic and announced to the crowd that they would be performing one of his songs. He said something like, "These people are jazz musicians and so they don't know who the frick I am. But fortunately I've chosen a song so goddam simple that even they can figure it out." Then they did about a 10 minute version of Stinkfoot, complete with a parable about Adam and Eve and Fido in the Garden of Eden.

ETA: Yep, Bozzio was on drums, Adrian Belew on guitar and Patrick O'Hearn on bass. I think Eddie Jobson was on keys but I'm not sure.

He wasn't THE Adrian Belew then, not yet. This was before his time with Talking Heads and King Crimson but Zappa only has the best musicians in his band so we knew he had to be good.

Also, it was Tommy Mars on keyboards, not Jobson. I think Eddie Jobson had joined UK by that time.

I just learned something interesting about this show. Belew was playing a Strat that looked burned and it had a shiny metallic pickguard. I remember the spotlights reflecting off of it sending beams of light all around the Assembly Center. Well that guitar was the same one that Jimi Hendrix set fire to at Monterey. Frank ended up with it after that show and I guess Belew was borrowing it. Dweezil has it now.

I had a short conversation with Mr. Belew on the pool deck of the Norwegian Pearl, nice guy. Later that day, I watched his Power Trio perform.

I was 13, so no way was I going to be allowed to attend a Zappa show then lol. Didn't start getting into him really until 10-15 years ago. Ironically I approached Zappa from the opposite direction chronologically of a lot of folks - got into the jazz world first which influenced a lot of his music from the 70s.

Love reading the stories about this show.
