That's an interesting group of musicians on that list. All the way from Chris Knight and Turnpike Troubadours to the Lumineers.

Lucero's record was pretty awful. American aquarium not being on there is a HUGE mistake. That record is amazing.

Omitting Cory Branan is another glaring omission

Ryan Bingham - Tomorrowland

Was awful too

I was about to edit and add the same thing, Doc. That's a hell of an album.

I thought about this, but then wasn't sure what their definition of American is.

Also, Turnpike's new album is good, but it's a definite step down from D&G. Which, to be fair is a tough one to top. D&G is my favorite record of the past several years.

I listened to the new Iris Dement, Sing the Delta, and it really is an outstanding work of art.

I used the term Americana (loosely) to include all forms of country, folk, alt-country, bluegrass, etc... ND pretty much covers all that type of music...

FYI - I believe the rankings are an aggregate of a poll from their readers...

For the record, I find American Aquarium bland and boring... but I definitely think they would fit in on this list if the readers chose to include them...

I also havent heard many of these records to judge the list...

My take as well. I know a lot of people on this board love them and champion their work... but I just can't get into them at all. I don't hate them or anything, but I don't seek them out at all.

I'm surprised Craig Finn's solo record didn't make the cut. It's uneven, but it has some real high points.

I am surprised avett brothers was number 2. It was decent but compared to their others. Meh.

I also find american aquarium to be just ok. Not terrible but certainly nothing that I would go out of my way for.

I am as well. I'm a huge fan of the Avetts, but this was their weakest album since... what? The Gleam?

agreed.

there some albums on this list that are only on there because of their name.

I love lucero to death, but woman and work is pure garbage.

Understandable. I enjoy them, but the drummer is a pretty good friend of mine, so I might be biased . Also, Doc's right, I feel like it's harder to appreciate them if you've never seen them live.

I think BJ is an incredible lyricist, but I DO wish I liked his voice more.

his voice is just one of those things... it's real though. he really does have a very bad drawl

people think he's faking it, but he's honestly not

I love American Aquarium but I have gotten incredibly sick of them here lately. I overplayed the frick out of them for about 6 months though

Oh trust me, I know. 100% legit.

I mean, it works for them, and I like their sound regardless. However, he is definitely not one of the great voices of our time.

Hell of a writer, though.
