One of the best bands of the 2000's is finally coming back after a long hiatus (I believe Pecknold took the time away to complete music college). Their new record "Ylajali" has no set date as of yet (that I can find at least), and they are playing a small European tour. They just added a festival in RI to this list, so hopefully they are soon to add a full US tour to this list.

I shall travel if necessary. This is a truly great band.

Their first album was pretty damn near perfect. Wasn't wild about their 2nd but it was OK.

The second has some great stuff on it, but yes it does have some weak spots. That first one is one of my all time favorite records. As far as debut records go, that and Arcade Fire's are two shining examples of near perfection.

The Sun Giant EP is equally perfect. Mykonos and Drops in the River are songs that should be discussed in any music class.

Agree. Their Sun Giant EP and S/T album are awesome. I had high hopes for their follow-up but it fell kinda flat. It wasn't bad, it just didn't grab me like their prior work.

I'm definitely in the minority here, but I like Helplessness Blues more than the debut, although White Winter Hymnal will always be their best song.

Agreed, mostly due to some lyrical content that wasn't all 'hey it's snow/mountains/rivers!'

They're both great albums, though.

From a music complexity standpoint, Helplessness Blues is probably "better." But in terms of general listening enjoyment, I think every track on the debut LP (and Sun Giant EP) are close to perfection.

That said, the middle section of "The Shrine/An Argument" off Helplessness Blues is pretty epic.

I will travel great distances to them if they end up not coming close to Nola, since I never got to seem them the first time around.

I've seen them about 5 or 6 times

They were great every time. I'll miss the banter from Josh Tillman. He always had some weird / awkward jokes between songs.

I agree with all of this. You are on point! HB is technically stronger (except that garbage Lorelei), but the debut and Sun Giant are superior for enjoyment purposes. The Shrine/An Argument is absolutely brilliant.

Drops in the River is by far my favorite song of theirs, and that's high praise considering my love for most of their work.

Blue ridge mountains is actually what made me want to play mandolin.

Thanks for posting. It's a decent song, but didn't really pull me in on first listen. Of course I'll give it several more.

Anyone been listening to the stream on NPR?

I'm three listens in and not sure what to make of it. It is very dense and intricate. Definitely less immediate than their prior records. I'm thinking once it clicks, it will be another great album, but I'm not there yet.

I'm about the same. I've had it on while working but nothing's really caught me like their first EP and S/T. But I'm not done listening.

First album was perfect. Their subsequent efforts never came close to living up. Hopefully some time away let them recharge. They were certainly ahead of the curve when it came to indie-folk.
