September 24 will officially mark 30 years since the release of Nevermind, Nirvana’s breakthrough 1991 album. To commemorate the milestone, Fender recently announced the return of the Kurt Cobain Jag-Stang, recreating the late singer’s unique hybrid guitar used in some of the band’s final live shows.

Available at GuitarCenter.com, the limited-edition replica features an alder body, 24” short-scale length, and 7.25” smooth radius rosewood 22-fret fingerboard. The vintage-style, single-coil and custom Seymour Duncan JB Humbucker pickups add punch when things get heavy, while the Mustang’s slider switch lets you quickly select from four phase settings. Its distinctive colors (Sonic Blue and Fiesta Red) make it stand out aesthetically;

Looks like a six year old drew the blueprint. Horrid.

Is there any difference between these and the ones they put out in the mid-1990s? I remember playing on one of them in high school and it was rather awkward feeling thing. They weren't cheap back then either, but nowhere near this much!

If I had to guess, the main difference is the buying power of the target audience. The vast majority of the guys who could not afford the Jag-Stang back then can afford one now. So they are priced accordingly.

That's how the vintage guitar market works. What your idols played that you couldn't afford as a teen or young adult, that's what you pay big bucks for in middle age when you're finally making enough money to have discretionary income. The model I just described dictates the market, drives the market and sustains the market. The only thing that changes are the idols, the tools and the fanbois.

I don't think they were ever great guitars. The Mustang and Jaguar (and their bass equivalents) were introduced by Fender as their "student" models. Basically their first budget, beginner models prior to Squier. It baffles me to see people pay larger sums for these things. I think these guitars were the only time legend Leo Fender didn't get it right.
The whole reason Kurt Cobain used them was because in the late 80's and early 90's you could find these things dirt cheap all over the place. That way he could destroy the thing after a show and just pick up another one the next day.

Not that I’d buy one, but just once I want a lefty that righties can’t have. We literally can’t get a signature left handed guitar based on one of the top 3 well known lefties.

Also, a lot right-handed people should be playing lefty since they’d be fretting with their right hand. I think a lot of people would have better luck with the guitar if they played this way. Rant over.

Probably just inflation. All the MIM and Squier guitars have increased, lately.

Jaguars and jazzmasters are used a lot by emo and shoegaze musicians these days.

Its because he was never a real lefty. Just found it easier to power chord with his dominant hand

The short-scale Mustang bass is fun but I don’t like that for guitar.
