The Smith Street Band

Hands down. Their first two albums are both incredible.

Jarle Bernhoft, the one man band.
I honestly don't know how 'recent' he is, but I've only just discovered him.

I've stopped suggesting bands on here. I think my tastes are too out there.

That wasn't too bad. Reminded me of Jonathn Fire*Eater's Give Me Daughters I would have loved that back in high school for sure. I tend to like below-average singers with great lyrics (Silver Jews, Daniel Johnston, Why?, Modest Mouse, Bright Eyes, Bob Dylan...)

This is a pretty cool song from Oberhofer, though I can't vouch for any of their other songs as I have not listened to any.

I like The Dirty Heads (not too obscure anymore, but they were when I started getting into them) and Uncle Kracker (again, not so obscure any longer but I liked him back when he was just Kid Rock's D.J.).

Bet Your Bits - The Dirty Heads

Austra

Classically trained female vocalists... Canadian hipsters with an electro vibe.

Lose It (Live)

Spellwork (Live)

ETA:

This band would be perfect for One Eyed Jack's.

Got a little bit of play on NPR's On Point this morning in a feature they had today on music to listen to in 2013.

gloom metal from arkansas. might not be obscure anymore since spin is starting to hype them and pitchfork named "sorrow and extinction" #1 metal album of 2012.

grand serenade has been one of the best bands in arkansas, but they never tour.

adam faucett - t. rex t-shirt

another of one of arkansas' best. he tours quite a bit, and i really hope someone picks him up. one of the best voices ive heard in person.
