There's a good documentary on the making of the record called Stones in Exile.

It is a great album, but Beggars Banquet is my all time favorite Stones album. Let it Bleed is great as well.

At the risk of sounding like a contrarian, I think it’s a very overrated and bloated record. It drags on in too many places. There are several throwaway tracks that add to a padded run time.

Its two predecessors are SIGNIFICANTLY better.

I have it as the fourth best RS album. It is the most overrated Stones album by a mile

Sticky Fingers, Beggars Banquet, and Let it Bleed are all better albums

While I enjoy the greasy/grimey sound of the album, it's just not as good of a collection of songs as the other 3 listed. And the mix of the vocals on the album is frustrating to me. It's too muddied up. It just doesn't sound right. I know they were specifically going for that sort of mix where the vocals are kinda buried on the album, but I don't care for it.

Granted it is still pretty much a masterpiece. We're talking about the Rolling Stones here. Their 4th best album is better than 98% of what else is out there

Those four albums make up the greatest four-album stretch of any rock band ever. The order in which you have them ranked is a matter of personal preference. Personally, I have them:

1. Sticky Fingers
2. Exile on Main Street
3. Let it Bleed
4. Beggars Banquet

Sticky Fingers gets the edge for me primarily because of Sway and Dead Flowers.

I'd actually rank Some Girls above Beggar's Banquet. Everyone seems to have their Stones record they feel is overrated and that is mine. My ranking of Stones albums
1. Exile on Main Street
2. Sticky Fingers
3. Let It Bleed
4. Some Girls

Goats Head Soup has some gems on it as well. Anything following Exile is going to pale in comparison but GHS is pretty good.
