He wanted to negotiate a deal on his terms for what he valued his life's work prior to dying & ultimately having his "estate" work out some deal for a different number than he felt he would accept vs. roll over in his grave.
Maybe there are some beneifical tax implications of doing it while he's still alive.

Forgot about the fact that taxes on inheritance are even worse.

All of that protest stuff was just a way that he saw to break into the music business
Phil Ochs called him out a phony back then. Of course Phil was jealous of Dylan's success too.

Dylan has aggressively sold his music for films and commercial for years (decades). This is nothing new
my guess is that “rough and rowdy ways” is his swan song, and that the never ending tour has finally ended. You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone

The great thing for me, maybe now some of my favorites will finally be on YouTube.
I have noticed that a few Dylan songs were hard to find in album versions on Youtube. This is still a pretty interesting transaction.

Almost none of his best stuff is available on YouTube. After thinking about it though, this probably won't make a difference on that, this is just about publishing rights.
The way things are going, maybe he feels that a time is coming, not too long from now, when copyrights and intellectual property won't mean a damn thing. Better to cash out now.

That was always bullshite, and he's said it before. All of that protest stuff was just a way that he saw to break into the music business. He was a guy that could write any way he wanted to, and he saw the folk music scene as the easiest path to get where he wanted to be, but he had to play the part and be convincing.
Dylan has said so much dumb contradictory stuff over the years that its silly to assume any one thing is the truth. He hates the media and took pleasure in yanking their chain.
I'm sure the narrative that most of us have accepted is true:
Bob was inspired by Woody Guthrie and saw folk music as an agent of both art and social change.
Bob grew jaded with the organized folk movement and wanted to pursue his own artistic interests.
Every few years, he underwent an artistic or personal Renaissance and wore it like a mask on his music.
