Larry Vincent, king of party records in the post-WWII era

From an interview Vincent gave to Dr. Demento in the 1970s:

quote:

In the latter half of the 1940s, as indie labels achieved an increasing share of the American record business, several labels specialized in what were called "party records" -- songs and comedy bits generally considered too risque by the major labels. In the immediate post-WWII era, one of the best-selling "party"-oriented labels was the Pearl Record Co. of Cincinnati. Pearl's owner and virtually sole artist was me, Larry Vincent. At a time when sale or possession of records with the f-word and other indiscretions could get you arrested, I made records that were just risque enough to be slightly scandalous to Middle Americans, yet discreet enough to be acceptable to at least some mainstream record stores.

"She's Got Freckles On Her"

"Sarah Sitting in a Shoe Shine Shop"

"I Took My Organ to the Party (But Nobody Asked Me To Play)"

Loved Dr. Demento back in the day. Can we just assume I posted all of Weird Al's catalog? OK, cool.

Also, huge fan of "Boot to the Head".

Agreed. Sure, they are a bit odd but they have some seriously great music under their belt.

Mad - It's a gas - I had completely forgotten.

I remember my brother and I buying that issue of Mad and rushing home pulling out the plastic coated paper record and playing it. I remember the only part we liked was the burps. We played it over and over and burped along with it. Predictably, our mother told us to go outside and play.

My dad had a couple of Spike Jones records that were wacky. The Hawaiian War chant was a laugh. LINK

We also had this Homer and Jethro album. The song Let Me Go Blubber was our favorite. LINK
