rhino is reissuing the studio albums on the 50th anniversaries. workingman's dead was earlier in the year and next up in late october is american beauty.

do you/i need another reissue of american beauty?
(no, we do not)

however...
its a 3CD set and the 2nd/2rd discs are one of the greatest live shows ever performed

02/18/71
Capitol Theater - Port Chester, NY

Set 1:
Bertha
Truckin'
It Hurts Me Too
Loser
Greatest Story Ever Told
Johnny B. Goode
Mama Tried
Hard To Handle
Dark Star
Wharf Rat
Dark Star

Me And My Uncle

Set 2:
Casey Jones
Playin' In The Band
Me And Bobby McGee
Candyman
Big Boss Man
Sugar Magnolia
St. Stephen
Not Fade Away
Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad
Not Fade Away
Uncle John's Band

the highlighted sequence might be the best 20 minutes of dead music ever created. dark star flows along and melts into what has been dubbed the "beautiful jam", then the first ever warf rat, then back into dark star.

here is the "beautiful jam"

LINK

and the rest of the show is a ripping good time

It's hard to beat '71 dead, no Mickey and no Donna. They are tight and experienced but still a foot in the 68-69 jam era.

I hope this means the Good Ol' Grateful Deadcast does the same thing with American Beauty that they just did with Workingman's Dead.

I've been waiting for a good thread to ask this. Does Jerry ever sing Box of Rain? Or has it always been Phil on albums and live?

Go easy on me.. I'm not a Deadhead but do like a lot of their songs. It honestly never occurred to me that Jerry wasn't the one singing it. I guess I'm not very astute.

always phil.
phil's voice changed drastically after 74 so thats probably what you are hearing if you are referencing later liver versions

Thanks That makes perfect sense. One of my favorite songs of theirs.

Newly created novice deadhead here...downloading this show now off the Relisten app...will report back later. I have noticed that some years just sound so much different than other years. Not always better or worse...just different but I do seem to favor the early 70's in general. This thread helps explain why...thanks!!

I’ve been listening to Dead shows for about a decade now and I still learn/hear new stuff all the time. It really is the best

Not to nitpick but the "beautiful jam" is the jam after Wharf Rat going back into Dark Star.

Also, not only was that the first time they played Wharf Rat, it was also the first time they played Bertha. Loser, Greatest Story Ever Told, and Johnny B. Goode.
