This is mainly rock related but could apply to other genres as well. There are some sub genres that haven't had a band of any prominence in at least 5-10 years, often more. A few that come to mind immediately are grunge and hair metal. Have there been any bands that sound like Nirvana or Pearl Jam that have made any sort of impact this century?

You could say bands like Creed and Nickleback are third wave grunge, and there's lesser bands like Days of the New and Puddle of Mud but even those bands have been around 20 years now. What about 90s alt rock in general? Are there newer bands that sound like Smashing Pumpkins, STP, The Breeders, etc?

Hair metal is another one. Steel Panther is out there but they seem like more of a parody of the genre. Are there new bands that sound like Motley Crue or Ratt?

For rap/hip hop, is there anyone new making Dre style beats? Are there singing groups like Boys 2 Men, Bell Biv Devoe, or New Edition? What about female groups like En Vogue, TLC, or Destiny's Child? Everyone's a solo artist these days.

I’ve had this conversation with my 15 year old son constantly. Everything new sucks and sounds the same: country, rock, rap.
I’m not sure what it is. Is it the lack of record labels? Did tik-tok ruin the music industry?
All country sounds like Morgan Wallen.
All rap uses auto-tune and can’t spit a coherent verse.
All rock is the scremo-rap variety, and unless your band doesn’t have 3 words in its name, you aren’t popular.
We all thought the 2000s brought about crap in all genres. It’s actually great compared to what’s out today!

I'm not even complaining about modern music. There's plenty of great new music coming out in more underground sub genres like death metal and hardcore. There's a lot of talk about nu metal having a big resurgence but it looks like its really just kids on tik tok discovering Deftones and System of a Down, not any new bands. There are some bands that take influence from nu metal but are still more on the djent side of things. I don't follow country or rap so I mostly just know about what's mainstream. Country in particular doesn't seem to have a lot of sub genres like rock.

nu metal

I grew up on STP and Alice In Chains.
Loved Hootie, Matchbox, Gin Blossoms, 3 Doors Down and Creed.
Fell in love with Shinedown, Thrice, Breaking Benjamin, Sevendust, Cold and Alter Bridge.
None of that is coming back. Thankfully the later is still coming out with new stuff but they’ll be classic rock sooner rather than later.
We’ll be stuck with Hollywood Undead, Ashes From The New and Ice Nine Kills
Now, I do like Shaman’s Harvest, Any Given Sin and Rival Sons.

Ice Nine Kills is one of the biggest bands in metal right now. Whether you like them or not, they are having a lot of success. That genre is obviously not dead. I don't care about old bands. I want newer bands having success making music in older genres.

That’s not nu-metal at all. That’s something completely different. Like them or not, it’s terrible, along with the rest.
Go listen to Any Given Sin or Rival Sons. Silent Season, Dead Lakes, and Thousand Below are good too.

Those genres are too recent to have a revival. Most young alt bands are channeling 80s alt like sonic youth, new order, or The Jam from the 70s , etc. We are going to see a young all girl band in a few weeks that sounds like sonic youth, Horse Girl is their name. Chastity Belt is a similar sounding band. I think the grunge sound will take another 10 years before it's cool again.

I have Sirius and Amazon Music. I don’t listen to the traditional AM/FM radio. What do you suggest I turn off and listen to exactly?

There is a vintage rock revival going on. It’s not exactly hair metal, but it’s similae. Look up bands like Green Gasoline, the L.A. Maybe, Dirty Honey, Moon Fever, True Villains, South of Eden, etc.

Post grunge is pretty much dead as far as new bands are concerned, but most of those band are still touring with large crowds. I still hear localish bands that sound like post-grunge occasionally like Them Guys and Love the Hate.

The reality is the current music environment is incredibly difficult for bands of any kind to break through. Even the emo revival isn’t really led by new emerging rock bands but by up and coming rappers collaborating with pre-established bands. The nu-metal revival is exclusively young kids discovering old bands, NOT new bands breaking through.

None of the bands you've listed are nu metal other than Sevendust. Most aren't even metal. I'm not even necessarily looking for new music or what's considered good, just more of an observation of how the public's tastes change over time. I think disco is gone for good but I don't see a reason why there shouldn't be modern grunge or hair metal bands but there aren't.

Adult contemporary was mentioned earlier. I can remember when Michael Bolton, Bryan Adams, and Richard Marx all had top 10 pop hits. There has to still be a large market for people who want completely bland, inoffensive music. I have a feeling those people are listening to modern country today but even that seems a bit more edgy than Michael Bolton. The entire idea of a vanilla white guy in his 30s or 40s with no personality and not especially good looking having major pop hits seems crazy today but it happened all the time from the 70s to early 90s.

Since living in the PNW for a few years now I've been on The down low recording music and taking inspiration from the old bands from the area. Combining that with elements of extreme metal, but in a verse chorus verse type of format.

Using old 90s gear to record with, been super busy lately. I need a break from things tbh.

I would love to build a studio somewhere like this.

Rock- Crown Lands, Goose, King Gizzard, Rival Sons, 1975, Tame Impala, Marcus King, St. Lucia, White Reaper, Uncle Acid, Dirty Honey, Larkin Poe, Gary Clark Jr, tons of others…..

Country- Lukas Nelson, Charles Wesley Godwin, Colter Wall, 49 Winchester, Mike and the Moonpies, Molly Tuttle, Ryan Bingham, Sierra Ferrell, Whiskey Myers, Chris Stapleton, Paul Cauthen, Zach Bryan, the list goes on

Some great soul, R&B and pop being produced right now as well.

British Ska..
The Specials
UB-40
The English Beat
Madness
Skatalites
Some great music there, and it seemed to runs it's course by 1990. I know there are many Ska bands left over, but nothing like 1978-1990. RUDE BOY!!

Progressive Jaz Fusion has been pushed to the back of the bus, and seems to only exist on YouTube and small jazz clubs.
Groups like Return To Forever, Weather Report, Stanley Clark, Billy Cobham, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Lee Rittenour, Jaco Pistorious, Herbie Hancock, Grover Washington,Jr., Jeff Beck, Jean-Luc Ponty and even Zappa. These folks were major headliners and there were radio stations that played their stuff. Now, you have to really search for it. Damn shame....
