Giving it a listen again after a long time and it strikes me how pioneering they were with synthesizers. Especially for 1973. Sounds like early New Wave music.

From a song "craftmanship" standpoint, they had very few equals. Obviously, it is cliche to cite the Beatles, but they were the prototypes of a music industry (producers and engineers, particularly) that had evolved to the point where such craftsmanship, while still amazing in hindsight, was more approachable that just a few years before.

So, part of this was "right place, right time." But the work put into, particularly, this album remains impressive almost 50 years later.

That's right. Next year, DSOTM turns 50.

If you ask me, DSotM is the greatest album ever recorded. Musically and lyrically it is, for all intents and purposes, perfect.

Not really ahead of their time. They were just one of the many during the heyday of progressive rock.

Arguably the most critically acclaimed record in history. 14x Platinum, 962 weeks on Billboard, over 45 million copies sold.

This will never happen again.

If I was allowed only one album for eternity, it would be Dark Side of the Moon.

It's honestly the GOAT album, I really don't know many others as strong.

Maybe Abbey Road, or Lateralus

Don’t know if it is the greatest album ever, but anyone who doesn’t at least include in the conversation doesn’t know music.

I never got into Pink Floyd until college and only knew of a few songs, like Another Brick, Comfortably Numb, Hey You etc. A friend told me to listen to all of DSOTM. It may have been one of my first great experiences of experiencing and consuming an album as a whole, start to finish. I remember finishing it and not being quite sure at what I had heard, but it sparked curiosity in me and made me want to play it again.

The album changed a lot about what music meant to me and set me on a path to discovering my own taste in music.

I haven't listened to DSOTM in a long time. Time to rediscover.

The always humble Richard Wright said he was just an organ player.

Here is some greatness context: Meddle then Live at Pompeii then DSOM then Wish You Were Here then Animals. Its actually overwhelming all the excellent music there.

I watch Live at Pompeii with the remastered sound track about every 6 months or so, a gift from the gods.

Listening to any of the Floyd stuff with a cool buzz is still one of the greatest recollections.

They were in their prime and they knew it, it all looks effortless.

I remember that feeling as well. I was never into Floyd either and then I caught the Live at Gdansk concert on tv and went down the rabbit hole. Man that was so great experiencing DSOTM, Wish you were here, and Animals for the first time. I love me some David Gilmour.

One of my good friends from 20 years ago once told me long time ago: you have to listen to DSOTM with Mary Jane and a nice pair of headphones and you will listen to sounds that you don't normally listen to (sound system or car stereo).

Still have to try that.
