Allen Toussaint, I just saw him in NYC last week.
Susan Cowsill though not from NOLA lives there now.
Paul Sanchez has a decent national following

New Orleans has a bunch of metal bands that are well known around the world. Thou from Baton Rouge has played all over the US and Europe.
