None, they cant “tear up” anything.

More like a slow death march.

Whose fault is it that the music is so slow? the rhythm section is the original devils, so is it because they're old? Or is Oteil slowing it down? Or is it done purposely so Mayer can keep up?

So many questions...

Last night's set list from Mexico was pretty epic. I've never heard a NFA opener nor a DS > Estimated > Eyes ... Total playing time was 3:10+ hrs). I'll agree that the D&Co. tempo on some songs is slow, when compared to the 80's and latter GD years. What's ironic is no one ever complained during select years and/or tours when Jerry was so Fk'd up he forgot words and also sang slower paced songs. DeadHeads just accepted it and said, "Oh, Jerry had a bad night". I've listened to enough GD and seen dozens of live shows to realize that song tempo was usually controlled by Jerry and influenced by what drugs the band had consumed that night. It was Jerry's band and all others played by his lead.

Bob has already gone public and stated that Dead & Company is NOT The Grateful Dead. Comparing them is pointless since 3 members of the GD are not a part of the current ensemble. Chimenti is not Brent, Oteil is not Phil, and Mayer is definitely not The Fat Man. Each bring their own playing style and improvisation to D&Co.

I too was one of the doubters and early critics in 2015-16 primarily because I had judged John Mayer without actually seeing the band live. For those who are so adamant and opine "This band sucks", go see them live at least once and then share your first hand experience. It's the same analogy as someone professing that "JRAD sucks" yet they have never seen a live performance. There will be only 1 Grateful Dead. I'm thankful that Bob, Mickey, Bill, (and Phil) are still alive as I'll continue to support their music and collaborative bands. It's only a matter of time before they all "Go To Heaven" and then we'll only have the memories.

If you look at the past 2 years of D&c playing together most of their early shows are slow. They typically speed up as they get more comfortable with each other. Their shows from Wrigley on last year were fire.
