Columbia House / BMG

Were any of y'all members back in the 80's and early 90's? I was too young to join but remember my older sister having tons of problems with them not cancelling her membership and collectors being very aggressive even after everything was paid for.

I did Columbia.
Worked like a charm.
Join up, get like 10 for a penny.
Only had to buy like 4, then I'd quit.
Then about a month or so later, join up again.
Rinse, and repeat.

Frick yeah... BMG use to send me featured selections I didn't want all the time.
Thats how I ended up with Tool's Anemia... I like how that ended up.
Use to buy t-shirts and stickers from them as well.

I would always buy my four required ones right up front with all the free ones. Then I would cancel and , sure enough, here would come more "special" offers with extra free choices to entice me to come back. They just never caught on and I built a huge library.

You usually got a couple hundred to pick from, and they were all classics or current--good stuff. Just like the others, I built quite a library of vinyl by joining over and over again.

After they got done bending you over for shipping & handling charges on your introductory package of CDs plus the $16.98 plus shipping & handling for each of your required CD purchases I don't care if you did get special offers, nobody was really pulling anything over on them. Plus the goddam "selection of the month" that they automatically sent if you didn't send the card back. The whole thing was a fricking ripoff, a borderline criminal enterprise.

I did Columbia House on more than one occasion but was around 13 or 14 years old when I did it. I sure as hell did not follow through with my obligation to buy a certain number of CDs after-the-fact and my parents never received any phone calls from people wanting their money. And trust me my dad would have chewed my arse out if he would have been on the hook to pay for something like that

I went back threw my older CDs last night... all the ones from BMG have their barcode on the back. I counted thirty-two cds.

Columbia was integral to me becoming a music collector for life. I signed up for the 12 for a penny when I was 12. Had no understanding whatsoever about how it worked. My parents got aggravated trying to get out of it so I stayed in for a year.
Later in life prolly no one worked BMG as much as I did. I would get friends to let me use their addy to join multiple times. I would then do the buy one obligation, get out, then use all the addys again. Estimate I got the 10-12 free at least 25 times

I am not proud to say I joined Columbia to get the freebie cassettes. This was back before CDs. Yes, I'm that old.

I did it in high school a couple of times. Never paid anything. I think I joined BMG a few times in college using a different name but my current apt address. I don't recall ever paying anything either.

Yes, I should've added that also. That's how you got them. In college when my friends and I lived off campus we'd always have a bunch of roommates. USPS would deliver stuff to our addresses no matter what the name was.
