I'm assuming they played Sandman. If so, it's been 21 years since that song came out. I'd say that counts as classic rock.

Is 98.1 the station that has "Mandatory Metallica" for like 30 straight minutes or an hour?

No song released after the 70's can be classic rock. Fact.

and Metallica is metal, not rock.

90s Metallica is hard rock, not metal. I've heard Puddle of Mud, Beastie Boys, Nirvana, and Tool on 98.1. They play 90s rock late at night.

As much as I love me some 98.1 and how much I grew up listening to it, let's be honest with ourselves. Classic rock isn't a real genre of music. It was made for radio
Nobody hardly listens to the radio anymore unless they're too old to work an iPod, their car is too crappy to have an iPod hookup, or it's providing background music at work
98.1's audience is old people and people who have the type of job that the radio is playing in the background. Those people are all construction workers and stuff
As the blue collar workforce gets younger, so does the classic rock. They play weezer and stuff these days

negative. classic rock is a certain period of time. not just cause a song is old.

bingo, its not like a classic car. there is a cutoff in style and music. even though the stones still make music, they would be on the eagle.

quote:
Classic rock is a radio format which developed from the album-oriented rock (AOR) format in the early 1980s. In the United States, the classic rock format was originally developed as an oldies format featuring the British Invasion era music of the 1960s.[citation needed] Classic rock stations re-create, in part, the sound of album-oriented rock stations of the 1970s and 1980s (although usually with a much more limited playlist) and appeal mainly to adults rather than teenagers.

I expect the same classic rock songs every day from that station.
should be like clockwork. metallica is not classic rock,
just because a song is old doesn't make it classic rock.

I wonder why live rock stations have never caught on
I know its not for everyone, but almost without exception I have a live version I like better than its studio version. I think partly because with most live music,a band has played it hundreds of times since recording it and play variations with nuance

Correct. Please see my post above. We can quibble over the precise years but the concept is right on.
