No shame! No homo! This board hates Journey for whatever reason but I have them ranked 7 on my all time greats of rock and roll list! Who's with me?

Always have loved Journey. Solid rock/pop band and Perry made that band great for that time period.

Wish Perry would bury his differences with the band and do just one more tour.

They're a very talented band that has suffered from being over-played to such an extent that I can't stand listening to them any more.

Gregg Rolie era Journey is still legit - Jonathan Cain era - not so much

True but the major hits came after Cain was brought in. It changed the sound and direction of the band.

yeah - more of a pop rock shift. Didn't mind it TOO much at the time, but in retrospect, after Rolie left the band lost it's soul as well as a a solid B3 player/vocalist.

Probably my guiltiest musical pleasure. But it is mostly confined to the three records after Perry joined, Infinity, Evolution and Departure. After those I don't have much use for them.

For anybody who prefers the Rolie era, I recommend the tribute band Departure. They're a little cheesy and the bass player may be one of the most unintentionally hilarious performers I've ever seen (weird looking goober who preens and gyrates like a male stripper), BUT they do a lot of that era of Journey's catalog and it sounds pretty damn good.

"Captured" is a fantastic live album. The set list, performances and production are first rate - Rolie's last release with the group.

Journey lover and proud of it. I couldn't care less what anyone else thinks. I remember Escape coming out the day before we left for a week long fishing trip. We listened to the album straight through twice. Don't Stop Believin' just blew us away and I had it running through my head that whole week up in Canada. The first thing I did when we got home was to race to the stereo to play it again while my dad was still unpacking the van.

My first car date was to a Journey concert. The Frontiers tour. Great show.

From 1978-81 they released Infinity, Evolution, Departure, and Escape. They were arguably the best arena rock band in America during that era.

I love Journey. Then again, I've never understood why it's so cool for "serious" music fans to hate on bands that become so popular. Obviously, they have one of the most overexposed singles in American rock history, but that shouldn't detract people from respecting some of their less heralded work.

I am more apt to shite on Mutt Lange and what he did to Def Leppard than knock Journey.

The time period of disco to pop fluff and hair metal, along with radio playing it to death, made people forget how great Perry was.

Only a handful of people can sing like that. EVER.

Like them. Highly gifted musicians. Great songs. Is it bubble gum? Sure. Is Journey Mrs. Midnight's favorite band? Absolutely.

Steve dying hurt them the most, though. Hysteria holds up to this day. It was different and hard to categorize.

And, they were still in their 20s when Hysteria came out (maybe Phil was 30). At that point, they were the first act to have back-to-back albums (Pyromania and Hysteria) sell more than 7 million copies each, something that had not been accomplished by Elvis, The Beatles, Zeppelin, Michael Jackson, anyone.

That would drive anyone to sell out. They did. And they survived, delivering great live performances to this day.

So, there's that. But, yeah, Mutt Lange is the CEO of Sellout, Inc. Just ask Shania Twain.

Yep, these were my end of high school, beginning of college years. There was a little bar in an apartment complex in Tiger Town called the Tiger Lair--the bartender used to play these albums from start to finish.

Anyone know if there's still a bar there? Back then the bar in front of the complex was Zachary's (now it's "The House"?) The Tiger Lair was in an apartment building directly behind that.

I really like Journey. They've made a lot of awesome songs that many people still sing all the time. I'm not saying they're my favorite band though, or even an all time great, but they've been solid since the 70s.
