Best American songwriter. His own totally unique sound, vocally and musically. One of the best satirical songwriters around. Could be hilarious or heartbreaking or mean or silly, sometimes all in the same song. I mean he wrote one of the most biting anti-God/religion/Christian songs I've ever heard (God's Song) and a song about a dancing bear within about 6 songs apart in an album. Awesome.

Anyway, if all you know about Randy Newman is Toy Story GTFO. Because Randy is the fricking man.

Some of my Randy faves:

Baltimore

Memo to my Son

Birmingham

Wedding in Cherokee Country

Last Night I had a Dream

Randy Newman is the man. Got to catch him at Hangout a couple years back and it was a perfect set for chillin on the beach in between high tempo acts.

Naked Man

Old lady lean against a lamppost
Starin' down at the ground on which she stand
She look up and scream
For the lamplight's beam
There stood the famous Naked Man

He say, "They found out about my sister
And kicked me out of the Navy,
They would have strung me up if they could.
I tried to explain that we were both of us lazy
And were doing the best we could."

He faked to the left and he faked to the right
And he snatched the purse fro her hand
"Someone stop me," he cried,
As he faded from sight,
"Won't nobody help a naked man?"
"Won't nobody help a naked man?"

Can't leave out Guilty and Marie. This past Sunday, at Snug Harbor, several local musicians performed a Randy Newman tribute; was fantastic. I believe it is also slated for next month at the Always Lounge on St. Claude.

My fav off his latest album is "Potholes". It's a song about memory loss from smoking too much weed when he was younger.
