Not trying to clear anything up, it’s a direct response to you. I’ve yet to meet a musician that I’d consider even remotely serviceable that didn’t think highly of Wilson and what the beach boys did for music. Everyone has opinions, some just don’t hold much weight considering the source.

Yea, completely useless. ...as a performer as well as a person. He went out of his way not to get along with Brian and Carl. Although he had reason to despise Dennis.
I thought Al Jardine, Bruce Johnson and Carl Wilson came off as decent guys. ...the rest...blah
Brian was OK. He's just not the "musical genius' people make him out to be. Like I previously said, he was the most important member of their group.

Have never been a huge fan of Beach Boys, but can respect the impact they made and being on the forefront of a lot of things.

I’m not a huge BB’s fan, but Pet Sounds was pretty groundbreaking.
I admit, you must have some appreciation for the difficulty of singing complex harmony parts to really appreciate it though. Most listeners have ears that are tuned to expect the standard three part harmony. Anything beyond that jacks with their ability to comprehend what’s taking place.

Yes and yes, agree. Brian Wilson seemed to be a shell of himself. That said, I never really knew much about him to really compare. Seemed like his brain was in 3rd gear turmoil mode.

I mean, I hope the journalist was genuine, but the way he had to steer the convo and talk to him was just sad.
Like when they were listening to his brothers song and in the middle, Brian says "stop, thats enough" and then theres an akward silence and the reporter says 'well how about xxxx". The whole thing just felt weird and in a way manipulative of a guy who didn't have it all there.

It's a shame Brian had a nervous breakdown since I would have loved to have seen what other things he could have achieved.
And I care to see if I can prove it, I think Mike Love was a major contributor to Brian's collapse by being a short-sighted bully to someone who was clearly fragile. He would have been happy spitting out their "409" and "Be True To Your School" formula forever. Brian was at least attempting to keep them contemporary.
His Rock and Roll Hall of Fame speech confirmed his reputation as a Grade A a-hole.

Recorded partly along side but not included on Pet Sounds, I think "Good Vibrations" is the Beach Boys master work. Their high point in my book. Love that freaking song.

Man...I kinda felt this way the first time I listened to Pet Sounds. I liked it, but I wasn't blown away. That was College me. 10-20 years later and I rediscovered The Beach Boys. Pet Sounds is amazing...as is Smile (original recordings with Brian's completed versions spliced in). Those two albums were the most interesting stuff The Beach Boys did because of the genius of Brian. Unfortunately he kinda went nuts and had a hard time continuing on in making music at the same level.
The cool thing about The Beach Boys, and The Beatles as well, is that they both were able to transcend their boy band / pop ethos and become something much different and trailblazing. I love both versions of both bands. You just don't see many other bands who have been able to do something like that.
