Brian Wilson of Beach Boys and Pet Sounds

Just watched Prime’s ‘documentary’ on Brian Wilson. Knew him as a music genius. Heard stories of the Beatles (Paul McCartney in particular) and their respect for him.
Pet Sounds is regarded as a master piece.
I’m GenX so before my time. Always loved music. Always liked Beach Boys.
God Only Knows is a great tune. Love the lyrics! But Pet Sounds as a whole does nothing special for me.
From documentary, I get the sense that is like saying Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon or Led Zeppelin IV does nothing special for me (and both very much are special to me).
Note (pun intended), I can’t play or write music. My conclusion: I am not a music genius.
Thoughts on Pet Sounds and Brian Wilson?

I am a huge Beach Boys fan. I do not get the hoopla over Pet Sounds. As for Brian Wilson, he was a musical genius who had a nervous breakdown after years of abuse from his father and proceeded to fry his brains out with drugs. Could not tour but kept writing great songs.

To truly appreciate why Pet Sounds was so impactful you have to look at what technology was available at that time. Also, the use of subtle or obscure sounds and instruments. The writing and meaning of the overall album rather than just the "hit" songs is fascinating. The deeper you look, the more you will appreciate the album. I hear new things every time I listen to it. Enjoy!

I think the impact of Pet Sounds was more in the way it was recorded rather than in the greatness of the songs themselves, although there are some great songs on the album. The Beatles were pretty up front that they were consciously trying to ape a lot of what Wilson was doing as they branched out from bubble gum pop into psychedelia.

I like Per Sounds for what it is and that’s amazing arrangements, beautiful harmonies and groundbreaking studio mastery. It probably doesn’t hold up as well as some albums that came out later, but it is still a masterpiece.
I do like the Beach Boys albums that coma after Pet Sounds like Wild Honey, Holland, Surf’s Up and Sunflower better, but that doesn’t diminish how groundbreaking Pet Sounds was for its time.

I liked them, they sang well, but never cared for this particular album. ...a couple of decent songs. Sloop John B, God Only Knows, Wouldn't It Be Nice.
I thought they were done once the British Invasion hit. They had a smattering of fair to good songs near to and around 64-65.
I thought Brian Wilson was extremely overrated. ...although I understand his importance to the band and realize he was their heart and soul.

agreed.
Wouldn't it be nice, Sloop John B and God only knows are very good songs though.

Masterpiece... I was obsessed with this record and can remember when it was finally released on CD in 1990 (that was a big deal) and then when the Pet Sound Sessions box set came out in 1997... brilliant!

No,
But he was undoubtedly overrated.
I'd put it this way, he was the most talented member of a group of really shi++y musicians.
Their early stuff was ok.
Pet Sounds....meh

Frank Zappa famously praised The Beach Boys' song "Little Deuce Coupe" for its specific V-II chord progression. He lauded it in his autobiography as an exciting moment in "white-person music" and "an important step forward by going backward". Zappa later quoted it in his track "Brown Shoes Don't Make It".
In his 1989 autobiography, The Real Frank Zappa Book, Zappa singled out the song because of Brian Wilson's clever harmonic choices. Zappa appreciated the inversion of standard chord theory, which injected complex, jazz-style substitutions into mainstream pop and rock.
Zappa didn't just talk about it; he actively incorporated elements of the track into his own work. For example, in the song "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" (featured on The Mothers of Invention's 1967 album Absolutely Free), Zappa referenced and parodied the "Little Deuce Coupe" melody, using it in a satirical context.

Oh good, Zappa likes Brian Wilson.

They weren’t famous because of their incredible instrumentals. They were famous because they’re possibly the greatest singing harmonizing group in pop history. I don’t even think anyone comes close. If you listen to things like the chorus of warmth of the sun or when I grow up to be a man, it’s absolutely masterful.
I actually just got done doing a Brian Wilson tribute at a local theatre. Played piano and sang a lot of harmonies. I’d venture to say of all the things I’ve learned it was the most brain taxing and really stretched my musicality. I don’t read music anymore I just play by ear so I memorized all 39 of the songs we did.
Brian Wilson was a genius pure and simple. If you think he sucked, or their catalog sucked, you don’t play an instrument, and it’s as useful as a farmer debating a doctor in medicine.
