Bonnaroo: Is there even a point anymore?

I remember the first few years, Bonnaroo seemed like an exciting thing to make plans for. Then, the posers decided it was cool to attend, once the brand was recognizable enough for them to name-drop. Then the promoters decided to try making it "all things for all people". Then finally, Live Nation climbed onboard and got their meathooks involved. Is there any reason to go anymore, other than so some low-info concertgoers can say "I was there, duuuude!"?

Only went the first year. I'd imagine it's still a good time if there are acts you really like, but it certainly has become more corporate and sterile.

I've always wanted to go, but the lineup the past few years haven't been good, so I just said frick it.

They've totally butchered it. I think 2012 was the last solid lineup. Now ticket prices/fees are through the roof, the lineup is 80% edm, and the cops are so far up everyone's asses that it's just not the same.

Attendance has dropped from 80-90K down to 43K last year. Hopefully it tanks again this year so they correct back to what they were producing but we'll see.

This friend of mine, she's a big RHCP fan (I used to be, before they became the Van Hagar of alt-rock, but I digress, lol...). She's going to Bonnaroo this year to see them, and she's pretty meh about the rest of the lineup. I pointed out that RHCP played two nearby shows recently, and she could've seen BOTH of them for far less than what she'll end up paying at Bonnaroo....my only logical takeaway from her response was that she wants to be able to say she went to Bonnaroo. I commented she's kind of a day late and a dollar short to be chest-thumping about that, but go ahead and blow your money, Live Nation thanks you, lol...

Bonnaroo was founded for the poseurs

Typical posers usually hold out until they know something has enough cache to be "posing" over...they're rarely the "first in, last out"-type IMO. Sure, I'm sure there were a few at the first couple of Bonnaroos, but nowhere near the amount in the years that followed...

First 2 years of Bonnaroo were amazing
3rd year would've been if the weather cooperated

I haven't even looked at this year's lineup. Nor have I really talked to anyone that's gone in recent years. I'd say if there 5-10 bands you want to see, it's still worth it. But I also have no idea how much tickets are now.

Going for just one band, especially one that tours as regularly as RHCP, is insanely stupid. That goes for any festival.

ETA: Holy shite, just looked at the lineup and ticket prices. $350 for that lineup is a joke. Good lord, people are so stupid.

Yeah, no arguments here, lol...

$350 is a fricking crime. And they'll get those overnight campers by the balls too, who no doubt will be forced to cough up even MORE money for concessions.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but there's not a helluva lot to get wowed by with that lineup. Even if most of those bands are good, are they $350+ good? Jeebus, even PT Barnum would say "whoa, too far" if he were alive today...

Then I guess I AM old. Back in the day, my friends & I wouldn't have wasted our time going to a festival unless the lineup was solid. shite, if bragging about going is such a big deal to someone's ego, it'd be easier to just lie and say you went instead, lol...

I've been twice to Roo and it is an amazing amazing place

However, the quality of musicians has taken a GIANT step backwards. It fricking sucks.

Went in 2013 and it was a pretty badass lineup. It was about $300, and it was totally worth it

There are certainly some bands I'd love to see, but that price is ridiclous.

I went last year, and it was really fun, but not even close to what I was expecting. You can get stuck camping 30 minutes away from the festival and the soundbleed was an issue. Not to mention, they don't support the jam community like they should. With that said, I'm not here to shite on what the festival has become. I don't say things like "poser" because everyone is entitled to their own musical interest.

Well, I don't toss the word "poser" around too much...but in the case of my RHCP fan friend, if you pass up not one but two opportunities to see your favorite band near your own backyard, choosing instead to pay a minimum of $350+ to see them a couple of states away, and admitting to not giving a rip about the other bands on the bill, then I don't know what other word I can use in this scenario

My first and only trip was 2010

It was miserably hot but I had a blast

Saw some awesome music

My faves: Dead weather, KOL, ween, black keys

I really liked how the flaming lips did the entire dark side of the moon

I saw weezer too

Last time I went was 2009. Line up has sucked more and more and I'm getting too old camp out 3 days in the hot arse sun. Only way I'd ever go again is if I got free VIP tickets that included the shuttle from Nashville.
