That is straight up rock and roll brother. It doesn't get made today by many people, but they are one.

To say that the black keys are "pop" music because they are "popular" is pretty ignorant.

If that's the case, then radiohead is a "pop" band right? They are pretty "popular"

I swear, this board is hilarious sometimes.

I consider Black Keys Rock-n-Roll or Blues Rock if asked.

But Pop Music uses elements from other styles whether it's rock, urban, EDM, country, etc. And pop music typically uses 4:4 beat, simple verse structure or verse contrasting-chorus and 12 bar blues progression. Do the Black Keys fall into that?

Pop music = popular music

Black keys = popular music

black keys = pop music.

Pretty simple. Why you cant grasp that, im not sure. They even suck like most pop music.

Thats cute

Are you saying that the Black Keys aren't popular? I find that kind of hard to believe. According to the billboard charts they are very popular.

Cognitive dissonance

Pop is being used like it is ''sound'' or ''style'' of music. Really isn't it just used to describe music that has become popular?

Did the Black Keys set out to make a ''pop album"? Or did they just do their thing and it became popular?
I think their is a difference

he really doesn't understand that just because a band may be "popular" that doesn't make them a "pop band" or someone that songs "pop" music.

Are the Alabama shakes "pop music"?

No.

Are the foo fighters "pop"?

laughable

I just laugh and shake my head how someone doesn't understand the difference between "pop music" and music that is popular.

It's not laughable at all. It's practically undeniable. I mean, you can make a case a lot of indie rock isn't pop for reasons of popularity, but a mainstream act like the Foo Fighters? They are aiming at a large mainstream audience and hit the sweet spot. They are consciously pop.

Dave Grohl used to be in a legit hardcore punk band (Scream) and still occasionally guests on a legit heavy metal act with little to know mainstream appeal (Killing Joke). I'd still argue those two outlying acts are also "pop" in the sense they are also part of the pop music machinery, but the Foo Fighters is so obviously created to make arena rock that will, well, fill arenas that it seems so thick-headed to deny their pop sensibilities.

OF COURSE, it's pop. It's really pop. Just about everything Foo Fighters do is done with hooking a large audience in mind, especially when you look at his side projects (and the other members, the rhythm section was in Sunny Day Real estate and Pat Smear was in the Screamers, and act so hardcore they never released an album because their lead singer died of a heroin overdose).

Though I'd even argue the most out there hardcore art punk band is also making pop music. And it ain't popular at all. But it is aiming for mass consumption.

From a musicological perspective, I think The Black Keys would fulfill most arbitrary requisites I could list for "Pop".

My... you could say... cultural intuition finds it an odd designation for them, though. "Pop" has gone in many different instrumental and production directions since the digital paradigm took over, but I think that I, like most people, still associate the generic term with electronic and synth-oriented music. Guitars and acoustic drums are still functional elements of the music, but they are not the driving force.

Since it's hard to figure out what "Pop" even resembles anymore (plurality of styles, and all that shite), it seems useless to use the term as anything other than a modifier for some subset: Pop Country, Pop Rock, Pop Punk, et al. These are by no means any more rigid and clear in meaning, but I think they are more practical.

Things tend to become muddled when you start trying to grasp intentions. Consumption of music does not necessarily entail that accessibility is its primary virtue, or what it was made to achieve.

If I grow up listening to certain popular billboard styles, and recreate that music, it could be because I am passionate about it and want to replicate the same sound, or it could be because I recognize the marketable formula.

The truth would be difficult for you to pinpoint, at least at a distant guess.
