then why don't they play small venues anymore
Posted on 1/30/13 at 4:25 pm to TreyAnastasio
i am a huge phish fan btw but this isn't the 90s anymore

They have a select dedicated fanbase.
They are in no way pop music. They dont get played on the radio, sell mass amounts of albums, or make 3 minute songs.
They are a jamband.
I have no idea how this is germane to our discussion.

i dont want to get into a pissing match on the music board i was just stating that this isn't the 90s.. they sell out huge venues / arenas now and i hear them on xm radio all the time. phish is popular.
Posted on 1/30/13 at 4:34 pm to Ooh Wee Ooh
You hear them on an xm station that is dedicated to playing jam music. I hear Vivaldi on XM all the time too.

Point is, they wouldn't be selling out MSG if their music wasn't popular. According to you, popular music = pop music.

They're not popular though. Like I said, they have a select group of extremely dedicated fans. If they were popular their albums would chart and their music would be played on the radio.

I figured Phish was more "popular" than The Black Keys, but I get what you're saying. I can breathe easier knowing one of my favorite bands of all time is not a pop band.

Its not a negative term. Thats why I dont understand why Doc got so upset that someone would label the Black Keys pop music.

Yes. This is the standard definition since the '50s.

Tell your hipster douche friends that you don't care about genre's and labels and don't let that determine whether you like a band or not.

So Alice In Chains is labeled "Grunge" but they're really "Heavy Metal".

Contrary to your beliefs, you are not the end all be all when it comes to music.
eta: Maybe when it comes to the Varsity, but you can have that

Simon Frith hits the nail on the head:
Spot fricking on
Not like I expect souljah to understand
quote:
According to Simon Frith pop music is produced "as a matter of enterprise not art", is "designed to appeal to everyone" and "doesn't come from any particular place or mark off any particular taste". It is "not driven by any significant ambition except profit and commercial reward ... and, in musical terms, it is essentially conservative". It is, "provided from on high (by record companies, radio programmers and concert promoters) rather than being made from below ... Pop is not a do-it-yourself music but is professionally produced and packaged"

The Black Keys USED to be blues rock back when they released Big Come Up, Thickfreakness, Magic Potion, etc.
However, Brothers and El Camino were full of pop elements and hardly had any blues in it.
I'd definitely say they're more pop rock than blues rock as of Jan 2013
