Just read the first paragraph on Wikipedia... it addresses both of the major points in this thread... and again, is right... it's not either fricking or...

Pop music is a genre. That's what I'm referring to. Not a type of song.

I agree, but it's also a term used to describe popular music...
You'd have to know what context the OPs friends meant it...
I can agree that The Black Keys are pop music... in a general sense... but I'd probably describe them to someone wanting to know what they sounded like as bluesy/rock...

I agree with all of that. black keys are popular in the music world, but they are categorized as "pop music" perse
