Black Keys... Pop?

A couple of my dumbass hipster friends were trying to say the black keys fit in the category of "pop."
Their argument was "dude, chord progressions bruh"
So am I crazy for saying the Black Keys do not make pop music?

Sure they do. Rock music is pop music. They make popular music, which is by definition, pop.

Black keys are classified as blues for a genre. Or "blues rock"
Pop is reserved for the likes of Katie perry and Beiber.

No, I'm just not hung up on labels. It's ALL pop music. But I don't put a negative connotation on the word "pop".

They were pretty "popular" back in their day, so by your reasoning they would still be pop bands.

Yes, they make popular music. What the actual music is has no bearing on whether or not something is pop.

Yes. Of course I would. Why wouldn't I? I'd describe unpopular bands as making essentially "pop music" as well, including the Velvet Underground and the Sex Pistols. They lean more towards "pop art", but it's still pop.
Why is pop music viewed as a pejorative? Pretty much everything aside from classical and jazz would fall under the "pop" umbrella. It's a broad term. I think that's great.

so popular classic rock songs are also pop songs?
Seems to me "pop" is a convenient word people use to describe bands they turn their nose at that happen to also be popular.
I refuse to believe there is a real genre of music in which the Black Keys are lumped together with Lady Gaga.

The term means different things to different people... I know a lot of british people use pop in an all encompassing term and its not a negative...
Most here find it as a negative if it isn't subcategorized like power pop or pop punk, etc...
I do agree the original label was a shortened word for "popular" but has grown to mean different things...
if nobody ever heard or heard of the Black Keys, i would def not use the word "pop" to give that person an idea of their sound... but in the right context, I can see its use...
just my 2 cents...

A band's chord progressions can not solely categorize their music into a specific genre, let alone pop music.
Sounds like the state street non conforming conformists are a little butthurt because they bought their first two albums, and now because their songs are on the radio, they think the black keys have sold out and make pop music

The fact that they say it's pop because of "chord progressions" is just dumb as frick, regardless of your definition of "pop."

That is straight up rock and roll brother. It doesn't get made today by many people, but they are one.
