Syd didn't die until he was 60. You're thread title specifically says early deaths.

I'm also not sure that his going crazy was a loss to music, as Pink Floyd's best music happened after he was gone. I'm of the opinion that we would have missed out on more had he been able to carry on.

overrated imo

basically woodstock made him because all the fricking hippies look back at that as some kind of performance from God

You can not like him, and that's fine. However, this is a ridiculous statement and unarguably wrong. He was undeniably incredibly influential and innovative.

You said "imo" and then made a positive statement. It's like saying the moon is made of cheese, imo. No biggie though. Back to the discussion.

How about Sam Cooke? I think that remember hearing that he was poised to become a huge star. I like the songs of his that I have heard.

Others not mentioned:
John Lennon
Marvin Gay
Bon Scott

I'm not a huge fan of Jimi Hendrix personally but he should be pretty high on the list. Amy Winehouse is a stretch

Yall have named some immensely talented people (ill never get over the loss of SRV myself), but this thread should begin and end with only one name: Buddy Holly

Holly basically invented the rock band (two guitars/bass/drums with a "frontman"). And died at 22.

Holly was the first to bring black music to white audiences widely, first to encompass blues and country influences into a "rock" sound. He died at 22.

He was the first singer/musician to write and produce his own songs. And they were pretty damn good. He died at 22.

He was a HUGE seminal influence on Dylan, The Stones, and The Beatles, therefore by extension essentially ALL POPULAR MUSIC that has existed since he died (at 22 ffs).

What the hell might he have done with ten more years? Or even two or three more? The mind boggles.

When it comes to lost potential output and influence, Buddy Holly is really indisputably the only correct answer here.

Could've gone down as one of the greatest country artists of all time, imo. Put out some great stuff.

This is a really indisputably stupid statement to make.
