Hootie and the Blowfish's "I only Want to be With You" references Bob Dylan quite a bit and even quotes "Tangled Up In Blue." So much so that I think he sued and won.

Leave it to Dylan to be assholish enough to sue someone for paying homage to him.

Best song about another artist/band by FightinTigersDammitVery simple. What's the best song one artist/band has done about another artist/band?

To me: Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here and Shine on You Crazy Diamond

Made for Sid Barret the former Pink Floyd member that basically fried his brain on acid and could no longer function normal.

John Lennon, "How Do You Sleep", about Paul McCartney

Also Paul McCartney's song, "Here Today", he wrote about John Lennon a couple of years after Lennon was shot.

Not quite legendary, but Spoon recorded the excellent and cleverly titled songs about former Elektra A&R rep Ron Lafitte (and Sylvia Rhone) who courted and signed them to Elektra only to jump ship and leave them without anyone to champion them at the label... label put nothing behind A Series of Sneaks (IMO their best record) to promote it and then dropped them...

Agony of Laffitte
Laffitte Don't Fail Me Now

They were released as a 7" on Saddle Creek... When Merge reissued ASOS, they were added as bonus tracks..

Dimebag by Cross Canadian Ragweed

Dimebag Daryll godbless that man
ripped from us by the devils hand
only thing in his plan was love and rock n' roll
cowboy from hell on a twisted trail
swept away where the wild winds wails
sad truth is you can never tell when its your time to go
