I'm not going to pretend that "best" is in any way objective

It's a very personal choice for everyone,I believe.certainly for me it is.
I'll vote for Pete Townshend.
It struck a chord with me.

Did I miss the death of Paul Simon or some shite? He’s obviously the greatest living songwriter. Why the glaring omission?

Kristofferson greatest dead or alive. Man is a pure genius.

There is no debate on this subject. Tom Waits and it’s not even close.

No Tom Petty? No one tells a story like Petty. If you asked Bruce who was better he would agree.
I have some bad news for you.

I haven't seen Max Martin listed. He's swedish and has written dozens of hit songs. If you can think of a catchy song from the last 20 years, there's a good chance he had a hand in writing it, including many of Swift's.
His music doesn't hit the same as many other's listed, but the quantity is there.

Paul Simon is who I would put in second now that Cohen has passed
Can't believe it took 2 full pages for Paul Simon's name to show up.
Certainly fell off in the 90s and he even admitted it, but for body of work, the dude has a mountain of classics.
S&G didn't even get to record one of the best: "Red Rubber Ball"
