I hated hair metal for a while there until I dated a girl who was into it and she turned me on to what ended up being my preference in these bands: the lesser known sleazier bands. Still like hearing some of this stuff now and then. So I don't know about "best", only my favorites, most of which I saw live playing in clubs BITD.

Badlands
Four Horsemen
LA Guns
Spread Eagle
Cats In Boots
Love/Hate
Dangerous Toys
Junkyard
Lillian Axe
Vain
Every Mother's Nightmare
Faster Pussycat
Child's Play
Lynch Mob

I usually think of hair bands as wearing hairspray and makeup and being based in LA- none of which Jackyl was but here’s a good article on Jesse James Dupree: LINK

"Hair bands" mostly changed their presentation around the time Guns n Roses started getting popular which was about 1988 or so. By and large they adopted more of a biker-ish image or they knew they were in danger of being left behind. Most of the musical mannerisms were still there though.

You don't cross into a whole other genre because you decided not to buy any Aquanet last time you went to the grocery store.

Van Halen is a NO for me. They predate Hair Metal IMO.

The same can be said for Whitesnake

Dear Owlie,

If that’s how you feel then you’re pretty much calling every swingin’ Hair Metal dick on this board a moron. I speak for all the rockers on here when I say that you must be out yo mind. How could anybody who came of age in the 80’s not love Sunset Strip Sleaze? Here’s my favorites;

1. The Original Hair Metal Steel Horsemen:
Motley Crue (GOAT)
Quiet Riot
Ratt
Dokken
Bon Jovi
Twisted Sister

2. Second Wave:
Poison
Guns N‘ Roses (#2 GOAT)
Whitesnake
Faster Pussycat
LA Guns
Tesla
Great White
Keel
Vinnie Vincent Invasion

3. Late Cummers (Just before grunge turned the parties, Aqua Net and summer stadium tours to flannel clad depression:
Warrant
Slaughter
Winger
Firehouse
Skid Row

Anybody else wanna chime in?

Hurricane was extremely underrated.
Fun Fact. The lead singer in Hurricane, Kelly Hansen, is now the lead singer in Foreigner.

Not hair bands.

Agree also would not have Skid Row in there, Slave to the Grind is in no way hair metal.

Here is my top 10 now that I have had time...

1. Cinderella...best vocalist and just awesome power ballads and great midwestern blues sound.

2. Hurricane...never got their due. Listen to "It's Only Heaven" and tell me you do not think it is just pure gold.

3. White Lion

4. Kix

5. Faster Pussycat

6. Dokken

7. Winger...yes Winger.

8. Britny Fox

9. Enuff z Nuff

10. Shark Island

I do not consider L.A. Guns or GNR or Ratt "hair bands" but there are your 3 best out of L.A.

1. I respect your opinion but come on baw, Keifer sounds like a dying cat in heat. My opinion in the vocalist category in terms of range and the Hair Metal Scream has to be David Coverdale of Whitesnake.

2. You’re correct about GNR. Not really Hair Metal but they always get thrown in that genre because of the time period they came to prominence in, and because they came out of Hollywood. LA Guns and Ratt were most definitely Hair Metal.

It’s also worth mentioning and I’m sure many on this board are aware that the roots of GNR can be traced to two bands: Hollywood Rose & LA Guns, which were both Hair Metal.

Surprised no one has mentioned Stryper yet, one of the most talented, yet underrated bands of the 80’s hard rock era.

Did anyone ever take them seriously?

Stryper sort of turned me off despite being somewhat talented. I, at age 11, was trying to rebel against church...not have it wherever I went.

By the time bands like Danger Danger and the like showed up...even before Nirvana did, I said enough is enough.

Anyone liked Autograph? On jukeboxes in 1986, you could hear "Turn Up the Radio", "Rock me Amadeus" by Falco, and "Let's go all the way" by Sly Foxx 24/7.
