of the last 25 years Radiohead is probably the best answer

Radiohead makes some very good music, but the voice of their lead singer is like nails on a chalkboard to me. I can't stand listening to them for very long for this reason.
I also find the amount of overdrive they use in songs like Creep to be a bit much in that it makes the sound too "fluffy". It causes the sound to be very muddy and making out individual notes and chords to be pretty difficult. I prefer a more "crunchy" overdrive like what Breaking Benjamin uses.

This is by design - to cover up for a relative lack of virtuosity - (the Edge does the same thing with Delay - Pete Townshend, likewise, uses lots of distortion to cover up a relative lack of acumen on his chosen instrument - at least compared to his peers).
I'm not knocking them for that, just calling it like I see it. Compare the guitarists from 2 bands I mentioned in this thread - Soundgarden and RATM - Kim Thayil versus Tommy Morello - Thayil can plan with anybody and Morello uses a complex layer of effects to conceal his relative mediocrity (and I dig lots of songs by both bands).

For staying power, I'm just not sure Radiohead has the appeal for relistening that some of the other bands will.
But, I do think it's possible Radiohead would earn the most critically acclaimed for the last 25 years. I respect Radiohead, I'm just not going to break it out for my kids in 20 years because it really isn't enjoyable for me to listen to. Obviously it is for some, but I don't know that the numbers will be large enough to carry a legacy.

I take no issue with a lack of virtuosity. My issue is simply with the quality of sound produced by Radiohead's distortion. Tom Morello has one of the best sounds in the business with his guitar. I enjoy his overdrive sound on most RATM and Audioslave tracks. Radiohead's just seems too..."fluffy".

For my money - Tool and AIC are probably at the top.
Alice in Chains would more than likely have topped the list if Staley had not died and if there wasn't that late '90s hiatus.

Tool
One of my absolute favorites, but mainstream accessibility has to count for something here.
quote:
Nirvana
Is their body of work really enough to justify such a title?
quote:
Soundgarden
Aside from Badmotorfinger, they have had two good albums (Louder Than Love & Superunknown), and then several average albums.
quote:
Foo Fighters
One of the more talented bands out there but I just don't consider any of them to be good songwriters.
quote:
RHCP
If Frusciante stays with them during the entirety of the past three decades, then perhaps so.
quote:
Pearl Jam
Vedder's own desire to never become popular has hurt this band as much as anything.
quote:
Smashing Pumpkins
Their longevity is far too lacking compared to some of the other bands.

I think you're crazy radiohead "ok computer" is a classic album. As well as "the bends"
radiohead will go down as one of the best bands ever. right up there with the beatles and the stones in the history books (or wikipedia)

whoa whoa whoa. I agree that OK Computer is something of a classic.
But Radiohead fans oversell the shite out of Radiohead. Not to be too simplistic, as I think Radiohead will age well, but something the Beatles and the Stones have in common is that they're fun. Radiohead is the antithesis of fun. I certainly won't be surprised if in 20 years it's pretty cool for 16 year music fans to like Radiohead. But I just don't know that they'll hang with the comparators you listed.

Meh - I am a rock fan - a little older (mid 40s) and I can name 2 Radiohead songs and 1 album.
I'm not saying they don't have a fanbase and a following - but, hyperbole like this is what turns people off about Radiohead (and Phish) fans. I don't dispute their talent, but "The Beatles"? -

Is this a serious question?
WSMFP no doubt

Admittedly Radiohead is a good bridge between popular and artistic acclaim (Tool, for example).
But they're still somewhat cultish.

Agree. In 20 years, a teenager liking radiohead will be like a teenager liking Pink Floyd now.

Unless it is something very mainstream (Foo Fighters and, to a lesser degree, RHCP) - all of these groups' fanbases are cultish, though. I'm a Tool fan and I readily admit how polarizing the strange nature of their music, the dark, cryptic lyrics, how they go out of there way to not perform live - but the subjective nature of music (as some said way early in this thread) lends itself to that.
One of the guys in my sig pic used to pick on me for carrying the Def Leppard banner - long after they were relevant.
I just don't care for much of Radiohead.

In terms of consistently producing great music over the last 25 years, I have to go with Radiohead and tool. They are the only bands I can think of that remained on top of their game throughout. Yes, they have long lulls between albumbs, but what their music was very well done.
But to me, they both fall short. I would prefer TVOTR, Spoon, Yo la Tengo, built to spill, and modest mouse. Only yo la tengo was active through that entire period, but the others certainly put out great music for most of that time period

I would agree with this. Very tough to name a best since they don't have a playoff or meet in the octagon.
Others of note for me: RHCP, QOTSA, TOOL, Modest Mouse

one of the most popular bands in the entire world.
who's up there with them right now?
coldplay
bon jovi
the rolling stones
maroon 5
mumford and sons
those are some of the most popular, highest selling (tours) bands in the world in 2014-2015.

Man, I agree with just about everything you've said in that entire post except youve got Thayil and Morello backwards. Morello is a very seasoned player and is big into music theory. He can do nearly anything on a guitar and is a more natural player. Kim Thayill is similar to Joe Perry in that he just kinda wails away sort of in key but is all heart. Morello is a very technically skilled player and I do agree, blows away (from a talent perspective) the Radiohead stuff (not even close, they can barely play) and Townsend, the Edge, etc.
To answer this thread, I would say hands down no.1 is Pantera and it's not even close. Then in no order...IMO
Metallica
Guns N Roses
Black Label Society
AIC
STP (there entire catalog is very impressive)
Candlebox (most underrated band of the 90's)
Audioslave (that first album was so incredible)
RHCP
NIN
Tool
Foo Fighters
Black Country Communion
Dream Theater
Pearl Jam
RATM
Soundgarden

but that's not what this is about is it? this thread is about objectivity (or it's supposed to be)
I haven't cared for much that radiohead has done since 2001, but I can still say that they've been objectively the "best" band of the last 25 years as they are still going strong.
think about it... they broke on the scene in the middle of grunge, outlasted it, did better post grunge, and are still putting out quality music nearly 25 years later. it's crazy to think about being that they are still considered "cool" by the younger generation.

I'll give another vote to modest mouse.
