Ibanez has some pretty good ones in that range

I've always liked the necks Jackson use, but haven't tried any of their basses. Been thinking on getting one though.

Ibanez

Find another $100 for the budget and get a SR500 (or 505, if you're going 5-string).

If not, you're still going to get a great bass for your price range in their 300 and 400 series basses.

Echoplexing what's above.

If you want traditional, get a MIM Fender. If money's a little tighter, check out the Squier Classic Vibe series. Insider tip, if you have slimmer hands, Fender Jazz Basses as a rule of thumb have slimmer necks.

If you want more ergo friendly, slimmer body and neck, look at the Ibanez Soundgears. They have basses in every price range.

Ibanez Soundgear, Fender Jazz, Fender P-bass (made in Mexico). If you get one of the Fenders and begin playing a lot, you can upgrade the bridge and pickups down the road, and have a top of the line sound on a budget.

As much as I love Fender, the Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. bass at $299 and the Sterling by Music Man Stingray Classic at $499 cannot be beat for value at the price point. That is if you are buying new. If not, I echo the above posts for the Mexican Fenders. They have come a long, long way over the years. Though they have gone up in price, you can still find some good ones new for about $600.

Always buy used IMO. Could easily snag a p bass for $300 or even cheaper.

The music man sterling line to me sounds like crap but to each their own.

If you want to go short scale I'm having fun with my Epiphone Viola Beatle Bass.

Great reviews and in your price range. LINK

I am big on that, but not sure about OP. Some folks are stuck on having new. That Sterling has a different sound, but for a new bass, you won't get anything from Fender or Ibanez that sounds any better. I would find a used Pbass and stick a 62 P pickup in it. They are about $70-$80 and are perfect.

Get the real thing. Go Hofner. You can find them for 400-600 bucks new.

Ibanez SR series, as mentioned by others ITT, are good solid instruments.

If you're not opposed to buying used, you can pick up a Fender Player Series Jazz for $450-$500.

I picked up a "Crafted in Japan" Geddy Lee Fender Jazz for $600 off Craigslist three years ago and highly recommend seeking one out if you are serious about bass.

A "real" Hofner, as in hand-made in Germany, will start at no less than $1,500 on the used market and go up very quickly and significantly from there. Their Hofner-logo'ed Ignition series are made alongside the Epis in Chinese factories. Their Contemporary series is the midrange line and while they are Asian production, they are excellent for the asking prices.

California made Jackson guitars are as expensive as German-made Hofners. The recent Indonesian-made Jackson guitars are superb values, so I'd assume the basses made alongside them are similarly good for the asking prices.

Speaking of Indonesian factories and good value instruments ... check out the G&L Tribute series basses. They are on par with Mexican-made Fender and also EXCELLENT basses for current street prices. New ones typically push beyond your budget, but you can find clean used ones in your price range. And insider tip: Musician's Friend is constantly running inventory reduction sales and "Stupid Deal of the Day" blowouts on G&L Tributes, so monitor them for flash sales. Heck, you may actually find an American-made G&L bass used in your budget if you shop patiently and like a hawk.

I just Googled "G&L Tribute Bass" and this SB-2 popped up immediately on Reverb for $329. A P-, a J- and a Stingwray tonally, all in one package.
