Corrosion of Conformity started out hardcore punk like in Eye for an Eye and transitioned to stoner metal / southern rock like in Clean My Wounds.

And Ministry comes full circle. They played “Revenge” live last week for the first time in almost 40 years.

Same bands I was going to mention. Each started as rock band and moved to pop.

As mentioned earlier: Pink Floyd, but that was due to personal changes, same with Genises and Fleetwood Mac.

i blame 'under the bridge'

they started out as 'pepper-y' as everything that came before w/ give-it-away and apache rose peacock but the commercial success of that fricking ballad changed everything. i feel like they were chasing the money from then on.

and once Kiedis cut his hair the soul of the band died.

My father worked for them.

I have a fantastic story about their father cussing out their record company over the tracks for the follow up to Better Dig Two. The tracks were produced by Rick Rubin and the record company hated them.

Basically their father told the record company, this is what you get. If you don’t like it, we’ll just go home and forget about music.

Pretty close to what happened.

Are you ignoring Breaking the Girl, I Could Have Lied, and Soul To Squeeze?

A lot of good examples, but bands that underwent a major lineup change really don't count. It's not the same band. I would go with Elvis Costello.

Watching the Detectives post punk sound to...
I Just Don't Know What to do With Myself Burt Bacharach covers.

The biggest and best change between consecutive albums might be Van Morrison Astral Weeks to Moondance.

No but my point was they had already changed their style. It wasn't because of UTBs success. Those songs were recorded before it was even released.

Eagles

Went from a stripped down country/Americana sound- Take it Easy, Peaceful Easy Feeling, Doolin' Dalton's, Tequila Sunrise...

To an overproduced, electric guitar based pop band. ... Heartache Tonight, Life in the Fast Lane, Hotel California...

All in about 4 years

plenty of bands change/changed drastically when there were key changes in the lineup...most have been mentioned already

to me, the most drastic change withour a lineup change is the 1968/69 grateful dead vs the 1970/71 grateful dead

they went from day-glo psychedelia in "anthem of the sun" to bakersfield americana in "workingman's dead"

I think that while VH's sound definitely went from a raw hard rock sound to a more polished rock sound was indeed a departure, it's not a dramatic change.
EVH's guitar work, Alex's drums, and Anthony's background vox still were very recognizable in the Hagar-era music.
Hagar's range gave them (Eddie) a much larger melodic palette to work with compared to DLR's style...

He did "IJDKWTDWM" on the Live Stiffs tour in '77

EC was influenced by the Brill Building from the beginning. A more significant change was going from Huey Lewis' plodding band as backup to The Attractions
