Dont people hate that St. Anger album?

That album fricking blows. I remember the hype around it when it was on the way and then a huge turd. Want to talk about Lars overusing the toms.

I know I'm a Whigs homer, but that's partially because they've continued to turn out relevant music throughout the years with each release. They turned 40(!) this year, and every one of their albums solidly represent their core sound while also expanding a bit.

I'm a big Cult fan, but I did not like some of their stuff in the 90's

Metallica's whole mid career output was weak. The Loads were ok at best, St Anger and Lulu were complete shite. At least they mixed in a great covers album and live album in there.

Steely Dan

I thought that their first 4 albums were great. Starting with the Royal Scam, it all started to sound like elevator music.

Peter Gabriel - first with Genesis, then solo.
Neil Young
Bruce Springsteen - first as a rocker, then Americana / folk ballads. If you
aren't broken by politics, you'll understand.
REM - 4 decades strong

What? Royal Scam is great. Kid Charlemagne and Haitian Divorce don't sound like elevator music at all and Aja came out the next year (although that is a more reserved sound). Steely Dan didn't really deliver for decades with no drop in quality though.

I was just thinking about this the other day when listening to Death Cab for Cutie.

Little to no drop in quality from the late 90's until their latest album. No sellout albums thrown in along the way.

Manchester Orchestra is another.

Black Keys had a few let down albums after a really strong decade but have bounced back nicely lately with heir last few albums. 25 years worth now.
