This is one of my best-sounding records, and its funny to me that it is also perhaps my most flimsiest and lightest record. Its funny because I always see '180-gram high quality vinyl' on records implying that the thickness and weight makes such a difference as far as sound quality.

What are the 2013 mixes of In Utero like?
I've been wanting to get a vinyl copy of In Utero because, if I remember correctly, it was the album they always wanted to make, and Steve Albini's goal was to strip the album down as much as possible.
Is the 2013 issue a release of the master tape or an updated mixing of the original recordings ?

Just picked up Sturgills new album and Hunky Dory by David Bowie.

Gettin' one in before my boy's baseball game...
Blaze Foley "The Dawg Years" (1975-1978)
This was recorded on reel to reel tapes as Blaze sat at the dining room table and played for family and friends. Just this amazing Austin, TX singer/songwriter and his guitar. Baby noises and adult laughter can be heard in the background, only adding to the authenticity of this recording. This is pure, stripped-down mesmerizing magic. Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Lyle Lovett, John Prine, even Kings of Leon have all recorded his songs. Blaze was taken too soon from us after being shot in a Texas bar while defending a handicapped friend. If you're a fan of Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Steve Earle. etc., give this guy a listen!!

It is a completely different mix. The differences are subtle. No cello on "Dumb" being the most noticeable difference to me.

I'm getting the project debut carbon esprit as my first turntable in this week and have been looking at preamps but I'm unsure of what to get. I've seen people recommend the art dj II for $50 and others recommend getting a used preamp like the Hafler DH-101. I'm trying to stay under the $200 mark and was wondering what does anyone here recommend? TIA

I got a Cambridge audio off of eBay for around 170. It's mm and mc compatible in case you wind up upgrading the cartridge before you get a new preamp. Most of the lower end ones I looked at were only Moving Magnet.
I accidentally fried mine when I plugged in the cable box power cord after moving some furniture. Sent it back and got a new one, no questions asked.

Is that the 651p? I'm leaning to that or the 551p after reading some more reviews. Probably the 651p because of the compatibility you talked about

Yes. That's the one. I got it in silver.
It's a great little unit for the money.

Look for a Lehman Black Cube on AudioGon...it is probably the best phono stage under $800...and it retails for $495.

Lil morning session...
Miles Davis "Jack Johnson"
This jazz/rock fusion record was recorded as the soundtrack to a documentary on boxer Jack Johnson. Excellent pressing contains two long songs (one on each side) of some jammin', even somewhat trippy jazz. Check it out!

I've probably heard more great things about the record than any other record. Gotta pick that one up.
