Not ready for streaming till sound quality is better than CD
This hurdle was jumped a few years ago…You can stream in 16 bit/44.1k (CD quality), 24 bit/96k, and MQA…your DAC just needs to support those higher sample rates (most modern DACs do so).
TIDAL and Qobuz offer hi-res streaming. I use TIDAL.

Thank you.
Then I think it would make sense for me to start with a streaming setup.

There are a lot of options now for CD or better quality on streaming.
In addition to Tidal and Qobuz, Amazon has a hi-res tier and it's a bargain. Apple also added a lossless and hi-res tier, which includes "Spatial" (Dolby Atmos) surround versions of some records.
I've been using Tidal for several years and have been very pleased with it overall. Tried Apple Music last year when they added lossless but had a lot of interface complaints and canceled after the trial.
Spotify has announced a lossless service but it's still not available and it seems to be a mystery when it will debut.

Thank you.
Here’s where I’m still getting confused.
What physical equipment do I need?
(Sorry I’ve been out of hi-end audio for awhile)
I would like to start with an integrated amp with no dac.
Do I need a dac and a streamer, or can I get one piece of equipment that has both?
Then how do I get the service? Tidal for example
Posted on 12/5/22 at 1:07 pm to Rohan Gravy
Tidal is an app. You just sign up, just make sure you get the right plan.
With regards to your other question. An integrated amp will have a DAC in it and you can get a streamer separate.
If you already have an amp you can get a streamer/DAC combo.
Aurender, Bluesound, NAD and I’m sure Cambridge all have options.
I have an integrated amp with the latest Bluesound Sound. I use the DAC in my Quad Vena vs the one in the Bluesound. I enjoy it, it plays anything and does it well for the price point. There are better streamers out there, but I think to get better it’s a significant price increase.
Lots of good info in this thread with very knowledgeable folks.

Ok
So I sign up with Tidal
Hi-Fi plan is $10 per month
Hi-Fi + plan is $20 per month
Then you have to pay for the music you download?
If so, how much?
Why do these services not explain this?
Posted on 12/5/22 at 2:59 pm to Rohan Gravy
Tidal doesn't do downloads. Think of it like listening to the radio, instead of playing CDs. (Except you have the entire library at your beck and call.) That's why you need something on your front end to connect to that service and stream it into your system, as the "source". Either an integrated amp that has it built in, or a dedicated streamer/DAC. It is a bit more complicated and more options for a system architecture than there used to be, so it's more confusing.
Re: Tidal, I think they now include the basic CD/lossless quality in the $10 tier. You can start with that and check it out, and move up if you find it necessary.

Thank you.
I know I sound like a dumbass! Lol.
I’m thinking of an integrated amp with a separate (very nice) dac/streamer
Music Fidelity
So I can pay for Tidal monthly, and listen to whatever I want to at no extra charge?
Posted on 12/5/22 at 6:08 pm to Rohan Gravy
Neither the Musical Fidelity integrated amp or their CD/DAC has streaming capabilities. So, you need a streaming device like those mentioned previously: Bluesound Node ($600), Pro-Ject Stream Box S2 ($900), Cambridge Audio (2 models $1100-$1250), and others that can vary widely in price. Look on Direct Music for a slice of what's available.
If you want Tidal Hi-Res (MQA) you have to have a streamer or DAC that can unfold MQA. Qobuz Hi-Res and the other streaming services offering Hi-Res don't require this extra step since they are not compressed.
Paying your monthly fee to any of the streaming services gives you access to their entire catalog at the subscribed quality level, plus those below. So, if you subscribe to Hi-Res you also get CD quality offerings.

I’m talking about the Music Fidelity V90-BLU5 HD
Sells for $550
Would match that with the integrated amp and call it a day
(I hope)
M5si integrated amp $2000
Both should last “forever” if I can figure out this streaming shite! Lol
I’m
Old school and still believe in big heavy transformers and A/B amps that produce high current.
Not sold on class D stuff.

Man…. If that’s what you want to spend on your streamer you really need to look into the Bluesound Node. It’s rated really high for the money and does MQA.
I’m not trying to make you buy it…. But you should research it before you buy something else in that price range.
I run my sirius, Quboz, spotify and it has other stations on it. I’m about to go back to tidal from Quboz.

Ok
This what I need to know.
I’m stuck on the integrated amp.
But wide open to anything else

I've never been a fan of Bluetooth/WiFi connections for streaming. I've always used ethernet, but if you don't have the hardwire connection, then you use what you have.

Yeh I’m hooked up via Ethernet

I have the hardwire connection or any connection I want.
I’m asking for the best audio sound that I can get from steaming
And I’m ok with paying for it.
Can’t seem to get an answer here.
Think I’ll just get a CD player and figure it out for myself.
Was thinking about vinyl
And a nice turntable and cartridge
But but but, you need a separate power supply, you need a separate phono amp, you need to separate your motor
Sorry for sounding negative, but the more research I do, the more I want to forget about it

Careful there now! There are a plethora of streamers, streamer/DAC pieces that are over $10K, and some over $30K.
THIS is what I would get…I listened to this streamer/DAC used as the source in a $700K MBL Reference rig—it was a pretty revealing player with flawless operation.
However, we all have opinions, and yours may vary.

You wanna play?…give me a budget and I’ll build you a frigging rig.
…and Pheroy laid out a fairly good explanation of streaming services.

Ha. OK.
I like the $500 range, give or take a hundred for a streaming device.
Will the Music Fidelity piece do what I need for streaming?
I’m thinking a rig made up of this:
Integrated amp
Streaming device
One pair of speakers
iPhone
