Alice Coltrane “Ptah, the El Daoud”

That is my absolute favorite Alice Coltrane record. Fantastic, classic stuff if you like that kind of thing.

I had heard of the album before but had never actually listened to it. So I bought it blind after reading some good reviews on this particular reissue. I’ve played it twice already, I’m really digging it…

If you like this, another one to look for with Pharoah Sanders on it is Franklin Kiermyer, Solomon's Daughter. Many years later, and a little more intense but in that tradition. Also, German saxophonist Muriel Grossman has recently become a favorite of mine in that vein. Very much Love Supreme era Coltrane inspired.

Agents of Oblivion, 2000

This is straight from the sludgy bayous of Louisiana, and despite the muddy recording & shitty record label, it is an absolute underground classic. The vocal performance is nothing short of amazing- you just don’t hear range like this everyday… If you don’t know, you should check it out.

Is Bama gonna sneak in the back door to another natty…?

I sure hope so!

Anywho…I finally got the time and energy to dig some of my tools out of the boxes they are currently stored in (half of my belongings are still in storage from Hurricane Ida—I’m still about 10-12 months from the new house being finished), and figured I’d get the VPI Aries 3 back up to par.

The long machine screws that hold the 3-layer “sandwich” plinth together are all rusted, but looks like there was no damage to the plinth itself. All the steel parts are stainless, so a Dremmel with a polish wheel will be used for all the stainless parts, and I will use Maguire’s automobile compound and my car buffer to buff out any swirl marks and restore the plinth to its original luster.
