so what i need to know is if my speakers are 4 or 8 ohm?
There should be a white paper or a spec sheet on the speakers that has the power rating, ohm rating and sensitivity rating.
The point is that there's a lot more to it than watts, watts, watts when it comes to pairing an amp with a speaker.

that is definitely a smart route.
i noticed that they only have connections for just one pair of speakers is this correct?
I guess I could visit their site for a unit with one that has two pair capacity.
Thanks

An integrated amp is almost always going to be a stereo pair of speakers.
How many speakers are you looking to drive?

Can you give the exact make and model of the speakers?

OMG i said since instead of sense.
please don't give up on me.
Google Savard series 500 studio monitors.
They were custom built in the late 70s to early 80s in BR to compete with B&Ms?

So I looked them up. They are very efficient speakers and super easy to drive from what I’ve read. They’re a niche speaker from back in the day. You do not need much amplifier power to drive them. I’d have to wonder at the condition of the drivers in speakers that old. The company is still around but has shifted focus completely from when your speakers were made.

thank you VA for the help.
speakers sound as they did the day i bought them in 84.
how would i know if the drives are in working order?
They still rattle the windows and the louder they are the better.
I've heard zeppelin on other set ups but for some reason you hear things on these that you you don't hear on others.
I know that sounds weird but true.
i'm thankful for your help and knowing that it may not take much to drive them so I guess i will look at more reputable brands ex, cambridge, marantz etc and what you recommended and start the process of elimination.
thanks and i will keep you posted as i narrow them down and maybe you help me choose.
have a vintage gerard direct drive turntable that i can't wait to spin again.
thanks again. peace

My pleasure. The Emotiva suggestion was a good one. Budget gear that is very highly rated.

Wow nice brsa, I wondered if they might be Savard. I remember them, a lot of BR locals loved them. I don't think they were tuned for audiophiles but more for music and especially rock lovers. They had those huge 2" thick cabinets that stood out. Went to their showroom a couple of times back in the 80s. IIRC they usually had Phase Linear amps driving them. That was one of the legendary Bob Carver's first designs.
They have a Facebook page with a blurb that's a bit unintentionally funny, basically saying they've been out of biz since 1995 but in R&D phase to bring back the best sound ever. Looks like they do actually sell some woofers with their calling card being a dual driver design woofer.

yes they are solid 2+" oak.
when he and william (i think)savard started their shop his partner was in the midst helping tear down a hospital.
They took all the oak doors and that's what they used to build the heavy bastards.
i remember me and buddy went together to buy them and every speaker grain was different so it was pretty cool to pick which one we wanted.
with them we also bought jvc receiver, turntable and cabinet to put those in. Good times.
we used to put all four of them together and dplay at some parties. Frowned upon by the nejghbers.

A nit to pick. Often times on the Tech Board someone will request a speaker recommendation. They always start out as best and end up as cheap.
Then you have people who make a recommendation and say "they sound great". Most people don't have a clue what great sounding speakers sound like and speakers are highly subjective.
Thoughts?

quote:To me music, speakers, and even electronic is sort like going on an adventure. Where the more things you experience the more you learn to appreciate. And what's good for one person is good enough if they're happy. And no there's nothing wrong with become more discriminate or educating your ears. It's no different that the answers you get when asking for vacation advice, recipes, or which gun.

For some it's killer 7.2 for their video, while for others it's the nuances of a symphony or going head banger loud. Enough differences that what you may covet, I may not want, and somebody else could easily not be interested in either. It might even just come down to economics and where you choose to blow it out. . . your priorities. You are just more aware with musical reproduction.

A lot of it, especially in these days of diminished brick & mortar store showrooms, is people not having a chance to experience what's actually possible.
I was ruined as a teen by my first couple of visits to Art Colley's where I heard not only B&W 801s, but Acoustat electrostats. It fundamentally and significantly altered my concept of what speakers could do (and look like!) and how music could be experienced. The boomy, resonance colored, poorly imaging Sansui speakers I had at the time were no longer anywhere near enough.
It's actually kind of amazing how good a sound you can get for not a lot of money these days in comparison, though that "good enough" is where most people stop without going any further. So when you have $200 wireless earbuds or speakers as the reference for a lot of folks, and not many opportunities to hear better, that's the bar.
The caveat to all that is - live music is the reference. More specifically, live unamplified music to know what actual instruments sound like. But that's also less common too.

Thank you both for your replies.
I think the lack of brick and mortars is a big reason. Now, because of that people use SONOS as their reference for sound quality and compressed music as a standard. Fortunately, uncompressed music seems to be making inroads again.

Wasn't trying to dis you at all.
The trick for me is to try and steer the conversation without taking over. The same with any topic that you have developed a mastery for. And this becomes real hard when lesser informed but helpful people question, ridicule, or keep on. It's near rampant in some threads, but I keep remembering it's just a part of people trying to help with what little they have, and not (usually) a personal attack.
BTW: Seen you bite your tongue before when subs get talked about.....eta: and no my forte is not audiophile level shop talk

No worries. You and I are good. I enjoy the discourse. I agree that for the most part people are trying to be helpful.
