Yea, not as much as I used to. I raced mountainbikes for a few years and then roadbikes and the triathlons and now I drink.

Especially the Italian gear--I've always thought Pathos Audio has some of the most beautiful stuff out there...

Anyone seen these new black Marantz faceplates that some guy is making for the old 70's models? They look pretty awesome.

Collecting vinyl is about as practical as riding a fixie

I have a few of my favorites for nostalgia, but I much prefer large format digital. I haven't found a vinyl in 5.1 yet.

But it has been done in 4.0...sort of.

That's because music is made/mixed to be played through a 2-channel left/right set up, while movies are made and mixed for 5.1 or greater format.

You may not be aware that vinyl can carry more than 2 channels. Back in the '70s, a couple of record companies were producing "QuadraDisc" recordings. I actually have a few (the Best of the Doors is one I own!).

Your turntable needed a special 4-channel cartridge/needle set up. The main problem and reason it was never successful is that the 4-channel cartridge did not work well on 2 channel--it didn't sound that great, but it did play. You also had to buy another expensive cartridge and the LPs cost more than their stereo siblings.
Then you had to change out the cartridge every time you wanted to play a QuadraDisc...and you needed 2 more speakers, and another stereo amp for them---basically a recipe for failure.

But it did show that it could be done.

QuadraDisc gave left/right rear channels. You might say it was a very early form of surround sound...done with vinyl!

I think there's a Steely Dan album or maybe a Donald Fagen album done in 5.1.

Deadwing by Porcupine Tree in 5.1 = sonic perfection.

I just don't understand the appeal of 5.1 audio for music. It makes sense for movies, but isn't the setup for music supposed to resemble what you would hear live? it's not like you'd have 5 band members surrounding you while you are listening.

For me it is all about the music sounding clear and being able to hear all the singing and instruments on their own. I describe it as sounding "crisp." If that makes sense.

Seems to much of a novelty to me, but to each his own.

No, if I want to listen to live music I'll go to a show. Albums have always been crafted beyond live shows, hence multi-tracking and mastering. If you are going to have 32 tracks, why not maximize clarity and provide depth to the music.

Vinyl is more of a novelty than 5.1

If Steven Wilson mixed The Empyrean to 5.1, I think you would understand.

Novelty? I'd argue it's more of a niche. Novelty is for toys and gags.

Vinyl, on the other hand, is a resurgence in an old medium of music. Is it because of the "hipsters"? Potentially. For me it's about the ritual. The ritual of going to a store that I wouldn't normally frequent to search through their stacks of new and used vinyl. The ritual of pulling that vinyl out of the large covers and placing them on to the platter. The ritual of dropping the needle and hearing the warmth flow through the speakers.

It's also a great talking piece. Nobody goes up to my MP3 player and searches through my playlists and says "hey, let's check this out" or "look at that amazing album art" but having a setup and a collection of vinyl piques interest immediately.

It's not as if I've replaced all music listening to vinyl because a record player in a vehicle isn't feasible and flipping a record at a party every 10 minutes isn't worthwhile but it's an appreciation of the originality and the music. Is it the most convenient form? No but it is enjoyable.

Anyone mind giving a complete newb some advice? I basically just have a player that I connect crappy computer speakers too, but I'm looking to step my game up as my vinyl collection increases.

I found a couple towers that seem nice, but what all else do I need? I know nothing about receivers, amps, cables, etc. What do I actually need?

Hey man, I am going to edit the OP with some beginner's tips but here are the basics

If you have a receiver with a phono input, then all you need is the turntable, receiver, and speakers. However, if your receiver does not have a phono input, you will need what is called a phono preamp. The purpose of the phono preamp is back when records were the primary listening method, receivers all had a built in phono pre amp. These days, it is less common to have a turntable as a primary method of listening, so less receivers have the PHONO input, thus, a phono preamp is necessary. Instead, you hook the turntable into the preamp and THEN into the receiver. Here is a pretty simple diagram.
