Thanks for the quick response. I'll have a better idea of what to look for now. Does any of this stuff come with cables? I clearly have a lot more research to do

It depends on the manufacturer, but I know my turntable came with basic RCA cables. I bought some on my own just in case, but at the very least you will need at least one set of RCA cables. I have two sets of RCA cables. One that goes from my table to my preamp, and then one that goes from the preamp to the receiver. Then I have speaker wire going from the receiver to the speakers and from the receiver to the subwoofer. Feel free to ask any questions, I am a beginner myself and I know sometimes it is confusing to figure out what you need to even get to playing records. Ask away.

You could also have a turntable, pre-amp, powered speaker setup.

This is true. Also good for listening.

I went the traditional route with a 2 channel stereo receiver with its own phono stage. I would eventually like to upgrade with a preamp to see if things could sound even better.

I found a couple towers that seem nice, but what all else do I need? I know nothing about receivers, amps, cables, etc. What do I actually need?
My advice would be to find a vintage solid state amp. You can find them at really good prices and those old amps have great sounding components. Much higher quality than most of today's amps(unless you drop serious coin on new stuff)
Also most all vintage amps/receivers have phono inputs so that eliminates another thing to buy.
Look for a late 70s/early 80s Kenwood/ Pioneer/ Marantz/Harman Kardon/Onkyo
You can get a nice one for very low cost

I had an old 1984 Technics system I may have thrown out. I know I gave the turntable to some hipster about 5 years ago and he almost smiled and said thanks.

Also the old Carver receivers are very nice, have a phono input, an can be had at modest prices on Ebay. They were pretty hyped up in their day, but I have had a couple of them and think they sound very good, they also look very highend even today.

Yeah, most all that stuff is better than the new stuff you get today, unless you spend like $800 on something

Huh? If your receiver has a phono stage, it already has a preamp. You shouldn't need another preamp, unless you'd like to get a really nice preamp and bypass the one you have in your receiver.

Not all built in preamps are that great of quality, I definitely prefer my phone preamp to the one built into my Yamaha receiver.

That's exactly what I was contemplating.

I just don't understand the appeal of 5.1 audio for music. It makes sense for movies, but isn't the setup for music supposed to resemble what you would hear live? it's not like you'd have 5 band members surrounding you while you are listening.
I agree. When things are placed extreme even within the stereo field I find it distracting.

Some of my favorite, and what I consider best sounding music was recorded mono, like many other things "less is sometimes more".
