On another note, I have been battling this room/bass issue since I moved into the new audio room. There is a big drop (about -12 dB) from 48Hz to 70Hz, and it has been driving me nuts.

The problem is that the 11” woofers in the Focal mains are cancelling out at my listening position. There is plenty of bass in the room, just not in my sitting position. There is a 4-foot sphere around my seating position that is void of bass--everywhere else in the room is good.

This has all been tested with numerous mikes and software programs, and my ears were proven correct--the data shows what I am hearing (or not).

Room treatments really won't help. The length of a 50 cycle wave is around 20-22 feet long, and I am sitting around 11 feet away--so, just at the halfway point of the wave--right where it is canceling. The physics of it all makes sense. The room ended up a bit more "square" than rectangular, which also doesn't help.

Active room equalization also won't work (I've tried), as these all "cut down" peaks--they don't "fill in" voids.

So, I believe I may now use an active crossover, and cut the Focals off at around 150Hz, then add a pair of the new cylindrical SVS 4000 series 13" subs and run them from 150Hz down to 50Hz, and then crossover again to the 16" SVS sub to handle 50Hz and down.

This will allow me to stop the negative sound I am getting from the Focals, and also be able to physically move the multiple subs around the room a bit for flexibility, and then be able to dial in each set of subs separately.

I guess I will know if it works once I get it up and running and run an assload of software and tests.

If it doesn't, I will have a TD MB subwoofer fire sale!!

Man... that sucks. Hope you are able to get it figured out. Speaking of speaker placement... I read some stuff online while the wife was out of town this past weekend. It seems as though I had the stands set up too high. I screwed the spikes all the way in (too much on what as I had a mess of sand from the stands b/c I had to take it apart to get the spike out.

But, I noticed a definite difference. They sound “fuller” and a little more deep to me. For the lack of better terms. Anyways I jammed a good bit this weekend. I found an Ivan Neville concert on Qello which was pretty good... the title is something along the lines of getting funkier all the time. Good way to test the new “sound” I found...

Not yet, I’ve kind of had to put them on the back burner for the moment as I’m having to purchase a new TT. I’m still researching and planning on it though!

yo marco,

have a couple questions. so i just purchased a scout 1.1 (pre-owned) the other day, and I'm wondering about solid phono cables for it. do you have any recs? i know vpi makes one for $300, and i don't have a problem paying that, but i thought i'd check with you and see if you recommended something equal to or less than the price of the vpi.

Second question is regarding cartridges. I'm looking for something in the < $600 range. I'm wondering if I should go with a high output MC or just a MM, and what you might recommend given that price limit? now i don't have a phono pre for a MC at the moment, and don't have any immediate plans on buying one either, but the mcintosh ma5200 specifically states in the owner's manual that:

"The MA5200 Phono MM (Moving Magnet) Input
is compatible with high output Moving Coil Phono
Cartridges such as the Sumiko Blue Point No.2."

so, given that would you recommend trying to find a MC or a MM? That sumiko blue point no. 2 would fit my budget, and i've also found a dynavector 10x5 for under $500 that has good reviews online. Both the sumiko & dynavector have a stated output of 2.5mv, and the current rega p1 table i'm borrowing has their stock MM carbon cartridge with a stated output of 2.5mv. Am I correct in assuming then that the sumiko & dynavector would function at basically the same volume level? If so, then the 2.5mv output should be fine, because the Rega Carbon sounds just fine with the ma5200, I'd guess i have to turn it up about 10% more to reach the same listening level as before with the old AT m12e on my dual. (which had a stated output of 4.2mv)

Table came in today, first time setting up a new table. Turned out ok I think. Was a lot more delicate than I imagined, and took quite a bit longer than expected.

Have cheap rca plugs in currently, went to connect the ground wire that was to run from junction box of the TT to the amp but the turntable already has a wire from the base of the table connected to the junction box, not sure what to do about that. So currently don’t have a ground from the table to amp.

Gonna be in Austin in just over a week checking out Dave at Austin360. I see they have a few record stores.... any ideas on which one to hit up? We will be staying near blanco/6th.

Waterloo & End of an Ear (though i haven't been to their new location yet) are my two favorites. There's a shop called Sound Gallery that has a lot of cool vintage receivers, amps, speakers, turntables and some records as well.

Waterloo is a short walk from Blanco & 6th, so definitely hit them up. Book people, across the street from waterloo, is a cool bookstore if you're into that too.

I love AKG and was gonna get the K702s, but decided to take a chance on Beyerdynamics DT990 pros. I tend to dislike the midrange mud frequencies and the reviews said there was a nice dip there with these headphones. Just got them today, but freaking LOVE them so far.

I can't remember your price range, but I would recommend you check them out.
