Yep .. cue the sundresses, short shorts and cowgirl boots.

Sorry, Doc, but there is more than one way to enjoy a band / song / show

Growing up I hated country and liked only the billboard type crap. I listened to rap as well. Now I hate all of it and only listen to country.

Well because today's country is closer to the billboard crap you liked than it is to country music. Americana/Red Dirt/Texas Country is a purer stripped down sound with talented acts and no auto-tuning or 120 bpm driving bass beats.

other than "ballad", OP never indicated what he considered 'country music.'

It's possible he means
quote:

Americana/Red Dirt/Texas Country

or maybe he means Taylor Swift.
or Jason Aldean
or Toby Keith
or George Strait
or Alan Jackson

The term 'country' has been co-opted by Nashville Pop, which is partially your point.

Many of the country bands that Ive listened to over the past 20 years were born out of people playng punk rock and getting older... so, its not that weird of a concept...

Uncle Tupelo, Whiskeytown, Bloodshot Label, etc..

There are usually still elements of that in the "country" they make...

The older I get, the more I like country music from my childhood (late 80s-90s). I don't really listen to anything modern. I could listen to Alan Jackson all day long.

Mainstream country turned into the pop outlet after rap and hip-hop took over the pop stations and pop lost it's niche on the airwaves and in song sales. That is why you have the Taylor Swifts and Luke Bryans of the world calling themselves country now.

There is still some good country music coming out of Nashville and especially Texas, You have to hunt for it as it's not broadcast over the majority of country radio. SiriusXM Outlaw Country is a great place to catch the good stuff coming out now that you will never hear on commercial radio.

Well, hell, I guess you would.

Saw her earlier this year open for Todd Snider. Nice show, lots of shout-outs to her "Outlaw Country Peeps."
