My band Maw Maw is playing Carrollton Station next Thursday the 18th and I'm doing my first gig with a Bass VI as my primary instrument.

Been really enjoying the way I can incorporate some extra chordal/rhythmic elements or higher register riffs, in addition to operating like a normal bass guitar like I do here

Anyone have experience on the instrument? Really excited next to try a dual amp situation so I can hard split and EQ to maybe get some grit/wet effects on the higher register through a guitar amp.

I bought one in 2022 because Chicago Music Exchange had a special run in purple.
It's very difficult for me to get used to, due to the string spacing and the distance between the bridge and the tailpiece.
Still cool as hell though...

Ha I almost waited to get mine in anticipation of their shell pink version...purple one is cool as hell too.

And yea I can def see that. I'm already a pretty "light touch" bassist and routinely switch between thumb picking and index/middle finger so while it's been a bit of an adjustment, it still feels fairly natural.

I have pushed the low E off the neck on occasion tho, still getting used to the lower tension

Is it Squier or Fender proper? Been thinking about getting one but don’t want to lay out a lot of money in case I don’t like it.

They recently brought it back, I think is a Vinterra model. The neck says Fender VI instead of Bass VI. But I really was talking about a real one from the 60’s. Those are pricey.

I've had two of the Squier Bass VIs cross the bench. Both arrived with factory setups that left a lot to be desired. A little TLC went a long way however - fun, badass instruments.

For the bass VI
Would you play it through a guitar amp or bass amp?

Either/or ... but a high gain guitar amp is more fun.

I want to try it ABY with both a guitar and bass amp and try to EQ the lows out of the guitar and add some effects processing to the higher frequencies.

And I agree about the setup, I had played a couple floor model Squiers before I got this one (shoutout to Cohen and his awesome Youtube gear page "SpiralCasterPlaysPedals" out of Baton Rouge).

Mine already had some nice work done and a great setup and it was noticeably improved from the models I had previously played. He had already put on some flats and some cool custom hardware too. I've been having a blast on the thing.

Here is some messy soloing in rehearsal for reference:

A band I really like has a girl playing a Squier bass VI and she really drives the melody of most of their songs. I saw them live a few months ago and started thinking about getting one for myself but haven't pulled the trigger.

I really like them but I've never played one. Lennon played it quite a bit on The White Album, Abbey Road and Let it Be.

I love the chunky sound.

I’ve heard the new Fender Vintera series Bass VI and they sound awesome.

I think George played it on Old Brown Shoe and Two of Us.

He (George) boosted his amp for Two of Us and played a bass part on a six-string Fender Telecaster. The brown one.

He did play the bass vi on The Long and Winding Road and Old Brown Shoe. I think he did on Dig It also.

I had never seen one until I watched Get Back a few months ago. John played that on some of the Let It Be songs.

The lady from Blonde Redhead plays a really nice vintage Teisco TB-64. That's another example of a Bass VI driving the melody.

I have a few Burns Barracuda's and a TB-64 copy. The holy grail of Bass VIs, other than the original Fender Bass VI from the 60s, is the Robert Smith Bass VI made by Schecter. Smith also played the Bass VI on lots of songs.

Nice, I didn't know anyone else even knew what a Burn's is.
