Anyone on here write lyrics? If so, how do you write them? What's your style? Like what you usually write about or what inspires your writing mostly?

I write songs ranging from mainstream to morbid. All that matters is whether I like to play what I've written. I write lyrics first.
I'm interested to know how other songwriters on the board approach their craft.

My influence is obviously metal. So I tend to write lyrics in a more aggressive manner and make bass riffs as such. But I do enjoy writing a power ballad every now and then. Use indirect metaphors and such. Double meanings and such. My music usually ends up being like a maze of sorts
If you've ever read incubus lyrics and read Brandon Boyd's work, you'd know what I'm talking about

I have my moments where I get in the mood to write some stuff out. That usually happens while I'm playing around on guitar or dobro. I used to write stuff down that would pop into my head randomly, whether it be lyrics or ideas.

I do sometimes. I have 2 notebooks slam full of lyrics and songs I've written. Some are good, some are pretty bad. Usually I'll be playing guitar and a nice little riff just sort of pops out. Then I'll go to my drums and come up with something. If that meshes, I'll go back to guitar and usually the lyrics sort of write themselves.

I'm in a band, I write some country type, rock/reggae, and I've even wrote a couple raps just messing around. It's a lot easier to write the lyric first then make music to go with it, I've had to write lyrics to fit music before an it's not easy because then you have to pick a topic that fits the sound and you're limited to how much you can write. I usually write songs about experience, story's, sometimes they're about how I'm feeling at the time and what I'm going through, you just have to feel it, and once you start you normally get on a roll with it. Good luck!

I would post mine but I'm not gonna chance people stealing them. I like mine. Especially cause they are really long a few if them. One is like a dream theater song as far as how long it is haha

Beetlejuice writes his own lyrics.
quote:
It look like a kango
I'm hangin on a hango
It look like a kango
'Cause I look like a gigolo

I love writing in general, whether it be essays for school, short stories, poems etc..
In high school I used to love listening to instrumental tracks and write raps. I would write about whatever was on my mind or anything pertaining to that point in my life.
Tbh, alot of them were real personal and had some anger flowing through them.

I write the lyrics and my buddy usually comes up with the melody for songs we play. My lyrics vary from sorta Lucero/ Slobberbone style to more random and obtuse like Beck.....like this....
The standards please
is all I need
you crack the whip
I start to plead
Buzz saw in flight
its quiet tonight
silence fades
crunch on a Lays
Chorus:
Monotone whistles
Monotone whistles
sounds the same always
monotone crunchy ways
The standards please
is all I need
you crack the whip
I start to plead
Buzz saw in flight
its quiet tonight
silence fades
crunch on a Lays
Chorus:
Monotone whistles
Monotone whistles
sounds the same always
monotone crunchy ways

I have written several. Here is one I wrote a couple of weeks ago:
Younger Days
I brought the rhythm and took away the blues
I was pretty wild; I was pretty smooth
Was something to see back in ‘82
Yeah those were my younger days
Jet black hair, kinda long in the back
I was the captain and I was on the attack
Had a good time baby, but I never called back
Yeah those were my younger days
A little one bedroom place, not much money, not much space
Much to dad’s amusement, much to mom’s disgrace
But you should have seen that little girl’s face
Yeah those were my younger days
Had a good buddy who was along for the ride
Wore our shirts untucked, had nothing to hide
Nothing ever got to us, we took it all in stride
Yeah those were my younger days
Had a job at a warehouse at corner of Main and Grove
How I hung on God only knows
Clock in every morning after all night on the road
Yeah those were my younger days
When I walked my feet never touched the ground
When I talked I never made a sound
I was the baddest son of a bitch around
Yeah those were my younger days

The Grass Was Green (And So Was She)
The grass was green and so was she
A warm south wind blew through the trees
The sun shined bright in a clear May sky
We spread the blanket on the ground as the river rushed by
Potato salad and fried chicken, biscuits and baked beans
Warm apple pie and a kiss on the cheek
Pretty tan legs and wonder in her eyes
Long brown hair and a face filled with surprise
While she was changing clothes, she wouldn’t let me look
When she put her hand in mine, I noticed that it shook
We waded into the river, she splashed water in my face
I kissed her long and slow and held her in my embrace
We swam forever or I guess so it seemed
We laughed, kissed, and talked about all sorts of things
I guess no one saw except the Lord above
As we lay on the green grass of the bank and made love
I didn’t see her again after that day
I never called, I used to be a jerk that way
But I never cared, never intended for it to last
I longed only for that moment of sweetness on the green grass
Well the days the weeks and the months they passed
Its funny how the years slip away so fast
I got a job with dad in the factory working ten hours a day
Heard she was going to college a hundred miles away
I was walking out of the bank, my loan had been denied
She was walking up, some guy by her side
She acted like she didn’t know me as they walked past
But that night I dreamed of a rushing river and green grass
The grass was green and so was she

Most of my stuff as of late seems to be nature related. Rivers, trains, travel, stuff like that.
When I was younger my style was weird as frick. I wrote a song about a ship wreck, metaphors galore in it. Might have to post it on here.

Collateral Damage (One Way Ticket)
Chorus
Come with me
(Take me away)
Be with me
(Let's break away)
Open me
(Please not today)
Make me be
(I'm waiting to be saved)
I remember your beautiful face
Your memory haunts me still
I shouldn't have stood around
Now I'm just too numb to feel
2nd Chorus:
Break me down,
(Tear me apart)
Hear me out,
(It's just the start)
Believe in me
(I will not let you go away)
I wish it was different
I have nothing left to say
Can't change the past now
But I sure as hell can change today
Verse 1:
Everyday was perfect for me
I had no problems at all
Couldn't ask for a better life
Against the tide I stood tall
She brought me all the joy I wanted
Listened to everything I said
But the good die young
Along with the song they sung
The bright light fades to black
Evil souls feast on those who can't fight back
Though when push comes to shove
Paper tigers crumple and glass houses crack
He'll never see it coming
He'll never see the day
He'll tremble in fear
Watching his life fade away
Verse 2:
Despair in his eyes
No where left to run
It's about damn time
I had some fun
Think you're big and bad?
You dirty vile instigator
You're in my world now
And I'm the (the) judge, (the) jury, and (the) terminator
Say your prayers you filthy bastard
No one cares what happens to you
Everything you did to me
Ill do right back to you
When all is said and done
I hope she'll rest in peace
One day we'll unite
Until then
Watch over me
Bridge:
What's done is done
And the past can't change
You let loose the beast
And fell prey to the fangs
Remember my name
Remember it well
You've bought yourself a one way ticket straight to hell.
Ending
It's all over
Please hear me Lord
I've taken life
Opened that bloody door
The taste of death is a nasty one
But my business here is done
I gave that ticket away
And there wont (ever) be another one
I'm working on this one. Especially the chorus. Inspiration was from Outlaw torn. But like I said. Trying to eliminate the cheese
