I'm going to go out on a limb & say some type of substance abuse. He has been put on leave from the band multiple times due to issues in the past. We will see.
Stanton Moore of Galactic played on their "Into the Arms of God" album back in 05 while Reed was on hiatus.

He has struggled with alcoholism for the last 25+ years. He has looked swole like an alcoholic for the last 10 years. RIP, COC made some great music.

Supposedly Reed had back issues that caused him to miss the In the Arms of God tour. I don't know if that's true but he was an alcoholic even back then.

Damn I hadn't heard. RIP. COC with Pepper was some good stuff. Saw them open for Metallica in 2000.

True. He was walking with a cane last time I saw him at a gig. Hate to speculate but alcohol, pills would be my guess. Liver issue, etc

The back problems can really get you, if you're not careful. Dealing with it right now.
The things that you do to make the pain go away, can easily get control of you, if you let them.

I think he had to quit a fairly recent tour because he was having seizures from alcohol. I've also heard that he had knee surgery recently. Could be like Jeff Hanneman where it was all the booze coupled with some other things and his body just quit.
