One of my favorite albums to this day. They certainly went off the rails after that.

I saw a lot of very good songs, but they were either too long or it had bad content. My teacher said to keep it kind of short and do you really expect my teacher to allow me to do a song that says f**k and s**t?! Anyway, the winner is....

what should have won:
quote:

Everyone in Nacadoches knew Tom Ames would come to some bad end
Well the sheriff had cought him stealin' chickens and such
by the time that he was ten
And one day his daddy took a ten dollar bill
and he tucked it in his hand
He said I can tell you're headed for trouble son
and your momma wouldn't understand

So he took that money and his brothers old bay
and he left without a word of thanks
Fell in with a crowd in some border town
and took to robbin' banks

Outside the law your luck will run out fast
and a few years came and went
'Till he's trapped in an alley in Abilene
with all but four shells spent

And he realized prayin' was the only thing
that he hadn't ever tried
Well he wasn't sure he knew quite how
but he looked up to the sky

Said you don't owe me nothin' and as far as I know
Lord don't owe nothin' to you
And I ain't askin' for a miracle Lord
just a little bit of luck will do

And you know I ain't never prayed before
but it always seemed to me
If prayin' is the same as beggin' Lord
I don't take no charity

Yeah but right now Lord with my back to the wall
Can't help but recall
How they nearly hung me for stealin' a horse
in Fort Smith Arkansas

Judge Parker said guilty and the gavel came down
just like a cannon shot
And I went away quietly
and I began to file and plot

Well they sent the preacher down to my cell
He said the Lord is your only hope
He's the only friend that you gonna have
When you hit the end of Parker's rope

Well I guess he coulda' kept on preachin' 'till Christmas
but he turned his back on me
I put a home made blade to that golden throat
and asked the deputy for the key

Well it ain't the first close call I ever had
I'm sure you already know
I had some help from you Lord and the devil himself
It's been strictly touch and go

Yeah but who in the hell am I talkin' to
there ain't no one here but me
Then he cocked both his pistols and he spit in the dirt
and he walked out in the street

[link=(www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofsTjYBJaac)]Spring Break 1899 by Murder By Death[/link]

quote:

The sun is coming up over the hill
Or maybe it's not, I can't even tell
But there's a warmth on my face that isn't the blood
And my tears are turning the snow into mud

And I can't feel my left leg but I think it's still there
Did I kill anybody? Hell, I never fight fair
What state am I in, am I still on the run?
Has it really been so long since I've seen the sun?

My instincts are telling me to pick up and go
But I can't feel my fingers, and I can't move my toes
There's a drained bourbon bottle laying next to my head
And the piss and vomit are the sheets on my bed

Is it you?
Could it be you?
Don't want it to

I went out all night drinking, so I took the bait
And I jumped off the interstate to Highway 8
To the bars full of girls who all know me by name
They all drink the same drinks and they all frick the same

So now my eyes are turning red in this hotel bar
And she's breathing out smoke as she motions towards the door
The kindness of a stranger or a trick of the trade?
God knows I'm not the first mistake that she's made

Is it you?
Could it be you?
Don't want it to
Is it you?
Could it be you?
Don't want it to

I been down and out, I been spit on for so long
I stored my shame in my belly until I needed to be strong
In my last guilty moment, stole a map and a truck
It's pure chance that I haven't already been picked up
But from here on the slate's clean, I'm heading way south
Always heard the girls were pretty there, I got to find out
Look Ma, your son's a travelin' man
I don't know what I did, now I'll do all the good that I can

Could it be you?
Could it be you?
Could it be you?
Could it be you?
Could it be you?

Another Murder By Death option:

[link=(www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7NoxuPvFn8)]The Devil in Mexico[/link]

This is the first song on their previous album, which actually comes immediately after heading "way south."

quote:

"Well, I'll take two shots," said the Devil to the man
And laid a little book on the bar
Well lord knows the Devil, he only talks shite
And only drinks whiskey from the jar
And his hands were raw
And his eyes were cold
And his breath was pure alcohol
And the sound of his voice, it never got old
And he talked and talked and talked through the night
Kept sipping his shine until the morning light
Tumbled in through the shades and as he started to go
I put three bullets in his back

Well, the Devil's bleeding crude oil from a hole in his chest
And it's panging on the bedpan, dripping through the bedsheets
And all the businessmen are putting pails beneath his wounds
And pawning the oil at the market

Well, his heart ain't made of nothing but piss and vinegar
And his boots have trampled more than you would know
And his breath has split open the thermometer on the sill
It's so fricking cold in here since you brought in the snow

Black heart leaking oil in the pan
Dealing insults with his free hand
In this hospital bed bleeding

Black heart, you shot the plan to hell
And the apathy ate you up inside

Like slivers of lead inside your food, he's the poison inside you
And you eat until you're full and you eat until you're full
He lit the fires inside your belly full of medicine and whiskey
Oh, the aspirin, Valium, codeine pills, and silver rum

Someone say a Hail Mary for this house
Bless the corners and burn the Devil out
Someone say a Hail Mary for this house
Bless the corners and burn the Devil out
Someone say a Hail Mary for this house
Bless the corners and burn the Devil out
Someone say a Hail Mary for this house
Bless the corners and burn the Devil out
Someone say a Hail Mary for this house
Bless the corners and burn the Devil out
Someone say a Hail Mary for this house
Bless the corners and burn the Devil out

"John Barleycorn", the old English folk song that served as the title and single for a Traffic album. It's a story about the temperance crowd trying to destroy "John Barleycorn" the grain that's used to make alcohol. Of course in the end:

"And little Sir John and the nut brown bowl and his brandy in the glass
And little Sir John and the nut brown bowl proved the strongest man at last
The huntsman he can't hunt the fox nor so loudly to blow his horn
And the tinker he can't mend kettle or pots without a little barleycorn."

It's a heartwarming story about the benefits of heavy drinking.
